mracz Posted May 7, 2011 Report Posted May 7, 2011 Listening to Billy Hart's Enchance (A&M Horizon) Oliver Lake, Dewey Redman, Eddie Henderson, Hannibal, Don Pullen, Dave Holland, Buster Williams, Michael Carvin... A great album which lives up to the all-star casting. I'm going to pull out and listen to two other Horizon LPs later (Revolutionary Ensemble and Sonny Fortune's Awakening)and which I have good memories of. Never seen any of these on CD... Quote
Head Man Posted May 7, 2011 Report Posted May 7, 2011 (edited) The Billy Hart HAS been out on CD - I have it - but I'm pretty sure the others haven't. The Horizon series of albums WOULD make make a nice re-issue set although a number of them have already been re-issued on CD. There are a couple by Dave Liebman & the one you mention by The Revolutionary Ensemble that all deserve to be in print Edited May 7, 2011 by Head Man Quote
walt Posted May 7, 2011 Report Posted May 7, 2011 I was lucky enough to get the cd of Archie Shepp-Live(Life) at Donauschingen Music Festival many years ago.I know lots of folks that would love to see that get a proper release. What a concert-from 1967-Shepp,Grachan Moncur and Roswell Rudd on trombones,Jimmy Garrison -bass, Beaver Harris-drums.Why MPS doesn't re-release that is beyond me,they've been releasing other older titles. Looking forward to Dogon A.D. coming out in a few months.Another chestnut. Quote
AmirBagachelles Posted May 24, 2011 Report Posted May 24, 2011 I came across this last weekend: Oliver Lake - Ntu: Point From Which Creation Begins (Freedom, 1971). I like it, though I don't know if it rates a high-care reissue project. It does seem though that Freedom has been massively neglected in the CD era. I feel lucky when I see titles such as these in good vinyl. Quote
colinmce Posted November 23, 2011 Report Posted November 23, 2011 What's the feasibility of doing Sonny's Time Now?I see it was mentioned upthread, but only briefly. Seems like a perfect candidate. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted November 23, 2011 Report Posted November 23, 2011 I'm told that Bernard Stollman (ESP) bought the masters from DIW not too long ago. Also, the Horizon Liebman-Beirach material was out on Mosaic as a Select. Quote
king ubu Posted November 23, 2011 Report Posted November 23, 2011 The Baraka track on the Murray is super weird - there's a story somewhere that even the musician felt ashamed of Baraka... ESP seems like the right place for a reissue (thanks to brownie I've got the DIW CD though). Quote
paul secor Posted November 23, 2011 Report Posted November 23, 2011 (edited) Don't think that Cecil's Fly! Fly! Fly! Fly! Fly! Fly! has been mentioned. One that's been hard to come by and one that I'd buy a copy of as soon as it became available. Edited November 23, 2011 by paul secor Quote

bertrand Posted November 28, 2011 Report Posted November 28, 2011 The CD version had two extra 'fly!'s. Bertrand. Quote

I don't think it has - that's why I thought that 'hard to come by' understated the case! I just played the album this weekend and posted it in the Vinyl thread. It's really a fine album, and if you are a CT fan, should get it. Has not been out on CD. MPS recorded it. Are they issuing CDs these days? If not, we might not see this one on CD, unless someone picks up the rights. David, I'm not saying this album is rare but I don't think it is all that common either. Quote
felser Posted November 29, 2011 Report Posted November 29, 2011 Verve has picked up rights to some of the MPS albums for CD issue in recent years. I can't say which ones, but I have a couple of Friedrich Gulda's they released on their JazzClub imprint (which seems to be German-based). Quote
peterintoronto Posted December 6, 2011 Report Posted December 6, 2011 What about Arthur Jones' "Scorpio"? Why they didn't reissue it with the fabulous bunch of Free America discs a few years back is beyond me. Perhaps because it was also issued on BYG Actuel and might now be licensed by Charly? I'm satisfied with my BYG Actual original LP but would gladly buy a cd reissue of this amazing disc. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted December 6, 2011 Report Posted December 6, 2011 That and Black Suite (Coursil) are hard to figure. I'm told that the America pressings were the originals, but as you say, I would suspect that Charly owns them now. P-Vine did a vinyl reissue of the Arthur Jones some years ago, though I'm not sure if they did a corresponding CD. It's a great record indeed. Quote
Late Posted December 6, 2011 Report Posted December 6, 2011 Might be my favorite record on BYG. Not my personal choice for Jonathan's reissue program, but a great record nonetheless. Quote
king ubu Posted December 8, 2011 Report Posted December 8, 2011 Yes! "Scorpio" is a fantastic album! Would love to get a reissue of that one! The only vinyl I could have bought so far was so battered I left it behind... (and it's a boot anyway, so...) Quote
David Ayers Posted December 8, 2011 Report Posted December 8, 2011 (and it's a boot anyway, so...) /quote] Those BYG/Actuel are considered boots? Or just this one? I am behind the curve on this... Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted December 8, 2011 Report Posted December 8, 2011 The story as explained to me, Claude Delcloo left BYG and took the tapes of Scorpio and a Jacques Coursil date to America. BYG felt the material belonged to them and issued their own versions - possibly needle drops. Quote
king ubu Posted December 9, 2011 Report Posted December 9, 2011 From what you hear, BYG has always been a rather shady affair in general. Too bad... I'd really love to see some reissues, but I guess the big reissues days have indeed come to an end a while ago, anyway. Would have loved to see more of the Free America series, too! Quote
clifford_thornton Posted December 11, 2011 Report Posted December 11, 2011 I was surprised that they didn't do a two LPs on one CD of the Archie Shepp Pitchin'Can/Coral Rock and Frank Wright/Noah Howard Uhuru Na Umoja & Space Dimension. At least they did do the Emergency record, which is an LP that I've always been quite fond of. Quote
webbcity Posted December 23, 2011 Report Posted December 23, 2011 Wow...I had never heard "Scorpio" before. Just checked out a clip on YouTube and it is pretty phenomenal. I vote for this one too then. Quote
Rupertdacat Posted September 18, 2013 Report Posted September 18, 2013 How about: Sunny Murray, "Big Chief" ? Quote
