Don't know how you feel about his music, but Stan Kenton was an intriguing man. There is a documentary in the wings—it will be out April 12, 2011.

More here:

Sounds intriguing. As I've mentioned before, for a good while a Kenton biopic (or a movie about a Kenton-like figure) might have been a natural for Clint Eastwood, with Clint himself playing the lead role. Clint was a big Kenton fan in his college days (according to his friend at the time and later on, Mort Sahl, who also was/is a hardcore Kentonian), and I'm sure Clint would have had a sure grasp of Kenton's temperament.

Off-topic: the Swedish spelling of the city's name is Malmö; I guess Malmø is the Danish spelling.

I know, same spelling, different Øs or Ös. Not a difference worth bothering with, is it? :)

Yes it does, but I am not buying the assertion that Santa Claus is Santa Barbara's brother.

Thanks, John T., for the info re availability—I have added it to my review.

Thanks Chris, for a very interesting reflection/review. One small correction - Cuban Fire was recorded in 1956 and released in late '56 or early '57.

Speaking of the Capitols and their unavailability in Denmark, seems like the Kentons did reach Danish soil not long afterwards after all, as in the case of this recording of almost exactly 60 years ago:

Amazing, too, that they still used the older pre-1948 spelling of their language (use of capitals in nouns, aa instead of å etc.) for the copyright "small print" at this later date... Makes the record look older than it is. The transition must have been slow.

Those changes (spelling, capitalization, å, etc.) came later, most of the old rules still applied when I left Denmark in 1954. The early Danish Capitols I bought had very cheap no-gold labels that often were bubbly and prone to tearing.
