sidewinder Posted March 16, 2011 Report Posted March 16, 2011 (edited) Just noticed that the LA Jazz Institute were hosting this event at the LAX Marriott over May 26th-29th: Big Band Olympics Looks like some great stuff on there. Toshiko Akiyoshi/Lew Tabackin Big Band, Dusko Goykovich Big Band, Arturo Sandoval, Bill Holman Big Band and a Valery Ponomarev Blakey Big Band Tribute. Plus a Clarke/Boland Big Band tribute.. Anyone on the Board planning on going? Edited March 16, 2011 by sidewinder Quote
Free For All Posted March 16, 2011 Report Posted March 16, 2011 Wish I could, it sounds like fun. I'll be interested to hear how many of the bands had the same LA players in them. I'm sure many will be doing double, triple, quadruple etc. duty. Quote
JSngry Posted March 16, 2011 Report Posted March 16, 2011 Any advance word on who's lighting the torch? Quote
DukeCity Posted March 17, 2011 Report Posted March 17, 2011 (edited) Was talking with Bobby Shew the other day and sounds like he's heading out for that to play in the Toshiko/Lew Reunion band. Edited March 17, 2011 by DukeCity Quote
jazzkrow Posted March 17, 2011 Report Posted March 17, 2011 I'm tempted to go.. Most of the band members will be LA guys.. But would be great to see Dusko, Basso, and Ponamarev tribute to Blakey.... Quote
