Teasing the Korean Posted March 12, 2011 Report Posted March 12, 2011 Anyone else as obsessed with this album as I am? It is an early 60s album on Verve. It is distinguished by at least three things: 1 - Anita is in great form 2 - Gary McFarland's arrangements have that 60s modernist jazz orchestra sound. 3 - It includes a number of tunes that you rarely hear in a jazz vocal context. I think "Night Bird" is arguably the highlight of the album, although I love the whole thing. Quote
JSngry Posted March 12, 2011 Report Posted March 12, 2011 Can't say I'm obsessed with it, but it is really, really good. O'Day's voice & McFarland's arrangements are both very "dark" in hue. Usually some kind of contrast would be called for, but hey, what works, works. Quote
Stereojack Posted March 12, 2011 Report Posted March 12, 2011 (edited) Love this album! McFarland's arrangements are sufficiently exotic, and the title track is one of my favorite Anita O'Day performances. Edited March 13, 2011 by Stereojack Quote
Peter Friedman Posted March 12, 2011 Report Posted March 12, 2011 (edited) One of my favorite albums by Anita O'Day. Edited March 12, 2011 by Peter Friedman Quote
BillF Posted March 12, 2011 Report Posted March 12, 2011 Long been a favorite! I have it on a 1970s Verve twofer, notes by Chris Albertson. Bears sticker: "Dobells £6.75p". Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted March 12, 2011 Report Posted March 12, 2011 This is a music minus one date - band in NY, Anita in LA. Very fine record. Quote
medjuck Posted March 12, 2011 Report Posted March 12, 2011 Love this record. IIRC good solos considering that it's music one. Quote
BFrank Posted March 12, 2011 Report Posted March 12, 2011 I have it in the Mosaic box, which I admit I haven't spent enough time with. Will check this one out, though. Quote
king ubu Posted March 13, 2011 Report Posted March 13, 2011 I have it in the Mosaic box, which I admit I haven't spent enough time with. Will check this one out, though. Same here... though I dug deeply enough into that box to really, really discover and dig O'Day! Quote

A small fortune then, 'back in the day' ! That's what I was thinking! Looking again, I see the album was produced in 1979, so it's after the great 1970s inflation. Ten years earlier, it would have been a king's ransom! Quote
