sidewinder Posted March 8, 2011 Report Posted March 8, 2011 Julian Siegel in particular is worth checking out. A solid and thoughful player - it should be a good gig. Quote
AllenLowe Posted March 8, 2011 Report Posted March 8, 2011 I'm waiting for Swedish Jazz Week in Albania. Quote
sidewinder Posted March 8, 2011 Report Posted March 8, 2011 (edited) It's the new Cameronian 'export economy'. British Jazz Weeks in Hamburg in exchange for imports of BMWs and Audis ! Edited March 8, 2011 by sidewinder Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted March 8, 2011 Report Posted March 8, 2011 14.03. Soweto Kinch - excellent player but expect a fair bit of rap. 15.03. Get the Blessing - saw them a couple of years back and was a bit underwhelmed. It was very late at night! 16.03. Arun Ghosh Quintet - not a name I know 17.03. Kit Downes Trio - currently being trumpeted as a next big thing. Saw him last year - OK but not completely engaging. I'm trying him out at Cheltenham again in late April. 18.03. Jason Yarde & Andrew McCormack Duo / Trio Wah - I'd really recommend the first. Yarde is a superb alto player and these two have produced a marvellous duo disc. 19.03. Julian Siegel Quartet - another strong recommendation. Very exciting player, especially in the nouveaux jazz-rock band 'Partisans'. I don't know if it's just me, but the current wave of UK jazz seems to have gone into a bit of a slump. A lot of the 'next big things' of a few years back haven't really sustained their promise; and there seem to be a lot of crossover into indie-rock or metal type bands around. Maybe I'm just getting old. Quote
sidewinder Posted March 8, 2011 Report Posted March 8, 2011 (edited) Certainly there are several very interesting bands/names around, producing good music. I would put the guys from 'Empirical' and Jesper Hoiby (Danish import) in that category. Dave Stapleton's group is excellent too. I think they are performing in the SW (specifically, in Poole) fairly soon. Jason Yarde - yes, I think I saw him as part of Andrew Hill's UK big band and he certainly impressed in that. A Lark Ascending Posted March 8, 2011 Report Posted March 8, 2011 Oh certainly, lots of excellent musicians. Empirical were my highlight of last year's Cheltenham. Quote

Jesper Hoiby and his band Phronesis are really a "big next thing", or not ;-), but anyway they are really great, and they have a good management (sue edwards), so i hope, we will here much more of them in future.... 14.03. nail75 Posted March 16, 2011 Report Posted March 16, 2011 Unfortunately, Yarde and Siegel do not play in Mannheim, but if anyone went to any of the other concerts, please let me know, what it was like. Quote
