cohens2 Posted March 5, 2011 Report Posted March 5, 2011 To anyone who may have purchased the Gigi Gryce biography, "Rat Race Blues: The Musical Life of Gigi Gryce," by Michael Fitzgerald and myself, please be aware that the discography and both appendices (compositions, publishing company holdings) have been updated and expanded and can be accessed at: http://www.attictoys.com/jazz/GG.html If anyone has any comments or corrections, please let me know. Thanks. Quote
Big Beat Steve Posted March 5, 2011 Report Posted March 5, 2011 Very commendable effort, this update. Hats off to you for your attention to detail! There are LOTS of authors out there who'd be well advised to follow the same route. Quote
cohens2 Posted March 6, 2011 Author Report Posted March 6, 2011 Thanks guys for responding. We hope to reprint the book at some point but not sure when or how. The original publisher went belly up. Maybe we'll do it as an ebook. But however we do it, it won't include the discography or the 2 appendices because we want them to be able to be updated regularly which isn't possible, of course, with hard copy. Also, eliminating those 3 sections will reduce the size of the book by about 100 pages which will make it more economical to publish and perhaps more attractive to a potential future publisher. I'd like to see the economy pick up some more before we do anything. But those 3 sections are going to be available online for the future. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted March 6, 2011 Report Posted March 6, 2011 Makes sense. Thanks for all the work. Quote
cohens2 Posted March 6, 2011 Author Report Posted March 6, 2011 Hi Chuck. You might be interested in an article that saxophonist Chris Byars and I wrote on Lucky Thompson. It also is only available online. Go to: http://www.crj-online.org/v2/CRJ-LuckyThompson.php Quote
mikeweil Posted March 6, 2011 Report Posted March 6, 2011 Great article! I agree that discographies should be published online where they can be kept updated at any time. Quote
Son-of-a-Weizen Posted March 6, 2011 Report Posted March 6, 2011 Go to: http://www.crj-onlin...ckyThompson.php I always play the 8 track edition in the car. Quote
Larry Kart Posted March 6, 2011 Report Posted March 6, 2011 Hi Chuck. You might be interested in an article that saxophonist Chris Byars and I wrote on Lucky Thompson. It also is only available online. Go to: http://www.crj-online.org/v2/CRJ-LuckyThompson.php Admirers of Thompson also should try to track down Tad Shull's insightful essay ""When Backward Comes Out Ahead: Lucky Thompson's Phrasing and Improvisation" in the "Annual Review of Jazz Studies 12, 2002." Shull is himself a talented tenor saxophonist who made several recordings for Criss Cross. http://www.jazz.com/encyclopedia/shull-tad-thomas-barclay-shull-jr Quote
cohens2 Posted March 7, 2011 Author Report Posted March 7, 2011 I thank Larry Kart for alerting me to Shull's excellent article a few years ago. Quote
