Tom 1960 Posted March 5, 2011 Report Posted March 5, 2011 I was listening to Phil Schaap's program this morning Bird Flight which featured some tracks from this album. The audio sounded great considering the time it was recorded, 1949. I'm mainly interested in hearing Parker although there are a few tracks featuring Ella Fitzgerald which also sounded quite good. I was wondering peoples comments on this release as well as some of the other JATP releases? What I particularly enjoyed about the collection which features Parker, is the raucous crowd on hand that night at Carnegie Hall. It sounds like they were having a great time! Again, your comments are welcomed and appreciated. Quote
king ubu Posted March 5, 2011 Report Posted March 5, 2011 Carnegie Hall 1949 is very good! Check here for some more JATP discussion: Quote
John L Posted March 5, 2011 Report Posted March 5, 2011 Pres and Bird back-to-back on an extended Embraceable You is one of the great moments of recorded jazz. If I could have only one JATP set, it would be this one. Quote
Christiern Posted March 5, 2011 Report Posted March 5, 2011 There was much criticism of these recordings—pandering to base instincts, depraved beyond good taste, etc. That said, aren't we glad Norman staged and captured there performances? I have loved them since my dear, departed friend, Bent Håndstad filled the air of his little Copenhagen record shop with that orgiastic sound—and that was over sixty years ago. Nat King Cole and Les Paul playing tag still lingers in my memory. Quote
colinmce Posted March 5, 2011 Report Posted March 5, 2011 Speaking of which, is there anyone who can point me in the direction of an affordable (in print?) version of the Carnegie Hall, Christmas 1949 show? Or am I just going to have to keep digging? Quote

Chuck Nessa Posted March 5, 2011 Report Posted March 5, 2011 (edited) That is part of it. The Charlie Parker set was issued on an Alamac lp. These were combined on a cd by Stash/Jass. I see I was beat. Edited March 5, 2011 by Chuck Nessa Quote
jlhoots Posted March 5, 2011 Report Posted March 5, 2011 Yes, also released on CD by Jass: That's the one I have. Quote
Victor Christensen Posted March 7, 2011 Report Posted March 7, 2011 I have both, like them a lot. Chris our friend Bent Håndstad was something else, really, a personality. Vic Quote
