mikeweil Posted March 2, 2011 Report Posted March 2, 2011 (edited) This is a tribute to Larry Young / Khalid Yasin's later Blue Note discs - didn't know Peterson was involved in this kind of thing. Has anybody here heard this? CD Baby Edited March 2, 2011 by mikeweil Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted March 3, 2011 Report Posted March 3, 2011 Now THAT'S news we can USE!! Thanks! Quote
bertrand Posted March 3, 2011 Report Posted March 3, 2011 (edited) The tunes are from the first two BN discs by Larry Young, plus one from Emergency. I'd like to hear someone tackle the Mother Ship and Contrasts material. Both James Carter and George Winston (!) have played tunes from Heaven On Earth. Bertrand. Rooster_Ties Posted March 3, 2011 Report Posted March 3, 2011 I'd like to hear someone tackle the Mother Ship and Contrasts material. No kidding, Mother Ship especially (but at this point, I'd take either one). I tried, I tried. It's getting to the point where you can't even pay people to play this shit, what's it gonna take?? relyles Posted March 3, 2011 Report Posted March 3, 2011 I purchased the disc. The trumpeter and saxophonists are both products of my local scene. I think Josh Evans (trumpet) and Jovan Alexandre (tenor) are definately young musicians to follow going forward, but as yet they have yet to quite find their distinctive voice - Alexandre in particular who is still a student at the Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz at the University of Hartford. Evans is easitly has the most developed voice of the two. Bianchi is impressive in a Larry Young mode. I would not say anything "new" is added to these performances and in fact they are played pretty close to how they were originally played. In any event it is nice to hear these compositions played again in this format. The couple of originals made less of an impression on me the first time I listened to the disc. I still want to listen to it more closely in the near future, but overall I thought it was a solid recording. Quote
mikeweil Posted March 3, 2011 Author Report Posted March 3, 2011 Thanks - sounds interesting enough to give it a chance. Seems I will order a bunch of organ discs from CD Baby as soon as funds allow. Quote
relyles Posted March 11, 2011 Report Posted March 11, 2011 I listened to this one a few more times last weekend and enjoyed it more each time. Quote
