nathan Posted March 2, 2011 Report Posted March 2, 2011 I apologize if this has been mentioned of late -- been off the scene for a bit -- but does anyone have any insight on a potential domestic reissue of this session or, for that matter, a review? Very curious, given the date and personnel... Thanks for any illumination! nathan Quote

J.A.W. Posted March 2, 2011 Report Posted March 2, 2011 Audio Wave's Joe Harley posted on the Hoffman forum some time ago that they are thinking about an XRCD version of Burrell's Freedom. Quote
EyeSpeech Posted March 2, 2011 Report Posted March 2, 2011 An SACD version would be even better. I have an email in to Chad Kassem/Acoustic Sounds. Quote
J.A.W. Posted March 2, 2011 Report Posted March 2, 2011 An SACD version would be even better. I don't agree. To my ears the tonality of the discs that were mastered by Alan Yoshida is better than the tonality of the CD-layers of the hybrid SACDs that were mastered by Steve Hoffman. Quote
EyeSpeech Posted March 2, 2011 Report Posted March 2, 2011 I can agree with that by a hair on some titles--but don't let them hear you say that at stevehoffman.tv or they'll grab the pitchforks and torches and come after you. Holistically I find the SACDs give the impression of live dynamics, details and overtones that makes the XRCD sound a touch flat in comparison. Anyhow, it's a moot point on this title. Chad just got back to me and reminded me it's a Music Matters title and won't be coming out on SACD. Quote
nathan Posted March 4, 2011 Author Report Posted March 4, 2011 Thanks for the responses, fellas. Any thoughts on the content? Quote
J.A.W. Posted March 4, 2011 Report Posted March 4, 2011 I had the Japanese LP (GXF-3057) many years ago; I can't say I remember much of this date, but with the Kenny Burrell/ Stanley Turrentine tandem you can hardly go wrong. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted March 4, 2011 Report Posted March 4, 2011 It is basically a combination of two incomplete/aborted sessions. 3 tracks with Seldon Powell and 5 with Stanley. Had the King lp and let it go. Memory says nothing really wrong or right about the material. YMMV. Quote
Shawn Posted March 4, 2011 Report Posted March 4, 2011 The Turrentine tracks are great, top drawer. It's a perfect companion session to Midnight Blue. Quote
JohnS Posted March 6, 2011 Report Posted March 6, 2011 I palyed my Japanese vinyl the other day. The Turrentine tracks are up to standard. The four tracks with Seldon Powell are all three minutes or less and presumably intended for release as 45s. Pleasant but nothing special. Quote
mikeweil Posted March 6, 2011 Report Posted March 6, 2011 The four tracks with Seldon Powell are all three minutes or less and presumably intended for release as 45s. Pleasant but nothing special. Maybe Analogue Productions reissues them as a set of 45's ? Quote
paul secor Posted March 7, 2011 Report Posted March 7, 2011 I'm with Chuck and JohnS on this one. Sold my King LP some years ago. Nothing special on that record. There are other recordings much more worthy of reissue. Quote
EyeSpeech Posted March 9, 2011 Report Posted March 9, 2011 The four tracks with Seldon Powell are all three minutes or less and presumably intended for release as 45s. Pleasant but nothing special. Maybe Analogue Productions reissues them as a set of 45's ? Not possible. Chad Kassem has already weighed in. Quote
