I'm surprised that Mosaic is even talking about long term future projects, given all of the potential issues that can come up. Maybe things are looking up for Mosaic! Quote
Late Posted March 13, 2011 Report Posted March 13, 2011 Just read this thread for the first time. Great news. I still don't have the Cherry set (just noticed my typo — I meant Chu Berry set), so I can wait for the Hawkins, which I'll eventually get around to. Will it include the unaccompanied solos recorded for the Selmer label? Will the Rivers be the live trio work with Holland and Altschul? (Or was it McBee on bass?) Doesn't matter; I'll purchase. Braxton, Threadgill, Rivers. What's next in this line? Hemphill? Quote

Swinging Swede Posted March 20, 2011 Report Posted March 20, 2011 Lunceford recorded some combined Decca/World Transcriptions sessions in the mid-40s. I hope all tracks from them will be included, because Classics only included the Decca sides. I believe there are some unissued numbers from these sessions also, but they may have perished in the Universal fire. We know from the Armstrong set that mid-40s Decca recordings were among the victims. Quote

I will not be waiting for Christmas, this will be preordered!!! Thanks Clunky for posting this. Yeah, this set is a huge deal IMO. First new Mosaic big box I've been excited about since probably the Threadgill, which is of course on a very different end of the spectrum. Quote

jazzbo Posted October 14, 2011 Report Posted October 14, 2011 Yes. Even near the beginning. Parts of the Hodes and Bechet sets overlapped I believe.Lots of great music. I was amazed. . . at how much of this, most of this, I already have. Quote

golfcrazy1984 Posted October 14, 2011 Report Posted October 14, 2011 This looks great! BTW It does have some overlap with the Lionel Hampton box set. Has Mosaic done that before? I think these same sessions overlap on the Hampton, Chu Berry and this upcoming Hawkins set. Also there was a live Flip Philips set that was duplicated on the Buddy Rich set and the Flip Philips and Charlie Ventura set. Quote

J.A.W. Posted October 14, 2011 Report Posted October 14, 2011 (edited) The Mosaic site doesn't show this in any way that I can see...in fact, Hawkins' name isn't selectable in the search-for-artists menu. Any tips for finding out more about it? The Hawkins set is not available for pre-order yet, so there's nothing about it on their site. The discography was provided directly by Mosaic. I got it a couple of months ago when I asked them about it; at the time they asked me not to post it because it wasn't final yet - apparently it is now. Edited October 14, 2011 by J.A.W. Quote
J.A.W. Posted October 14, 2011 Report Posted October 14, 2011 (edited) These are the notes and credits as I got them from Mosaic a couple of months ago; they may not be the definitive notes that will appear in the booklet: For the purposes of this discography, only the first issue number of each matrix is listed unless contemporaneous issues exist. The personnel and instrumentation reflect only the titles represented in this set and not the entire session. To the best of our knowledge, this discography is presented in the order in which each take was recorded. However, the CDs contained in this set are sequenced with the master take first and then any alternates at the conclusion of the disc. An exception to this rule is found in Session (QQ) and (EEE) and is explained in the Producer’s Note at the end of this discography. Any alternate takes that have been listed in discographies but are no longer in the vaults are listed as unissued, master no longer exists. This discography stems from the following reference materials: Hendersonia by Walter C. Allen (self published), Benny Carter: A Life In American Music by Morroe Berger, Ed Berger and James Patrick (Scarecrow Press), The Tenor Saxophone Of Coleman Hawkins 1929-1942 by Jan Evensmo (self published), The Jazz Discography by Tom Lord (Cadence Jazz Books), Jazz Records 1897-1942 Fifth Edition by Brian Rust (Storyville), Jimmy Dorsey: A Study In Contrasts by Robert L. Producer’s note: The vision of this set is to present selected Coleman Hawkins recordings from mainly the 1930s and 1940s as originally recorded on labels either currently owned by Sony Music (Banner, Bluebird, Brunswick, Cameo, Clarion, Columbia, Conqueror, Domino, Harmony, Lincoln, Melotone, OKeh, Oriole, Perfect, Romeo, Signature, Velvet Tone, Victor, Vocalion and “X”). We have also included sessions that currently have no ownership and are in the public domain (Baronet, Ca-Song, Continental, Manor and Regis). The criteria for admission then fell on all recordings led by Hawkins in addition to sessions where as a sideman for other bands he solos for more than 16 bars. (In some cases, there will be a stretching of the boundaries. For example, among my souvenirs<XC> from Session QQ has a short Hawkins solo but is retained so that the session can be presented in its entirety). Within this concept, representative samplings of titles from the ‘20s add as a springboard to this package. Hawkin’s European recordings from the ‘30s are under other labels and therefore have not been added to this package. Although the sound quality of these sessions will differ from track to track, we have made every effort to obtain the best possible source material, be it the original metal parts, test pressings or commercially released 78s. In particular, some specific problems beyond our control include the following: The test pressing we used for the alternate take (-2) of hocus pocus<XC> only exists as a dub. A speed variation at the beginning of angel face<XC> which was caused by the original cutting machine used by RCA engineers. As noted in other Mosaic boxed sets that contain sources from single metal parts, the master take is seldom the first but instead usually the last take recorded. The majority of sessions from the American Record Corporation (or ARC, the original parent company of the recordings contained herein) chose for initial release the -A or -1 takes and a –B or -2 for the second choice, etc. Since there is no surviving company file that shows the original recording sequence, it was decided that for the sake of comparison within this discography, it would be best if most of the takes of a given master were grouped together in descending alphabetical or numerical order. This is not an exact science but we believe this approach most closely approximates the original recording sequence. In a departure from previous Mosaic sets, we have included full performances from the lacquer discs that existed for Sessions (QQ) and (EEE). Considering we or any other label may never again have the opportunity to release these in their entirety, it was imperative we issue them in complete form.
