porcy62 Posted February 5, 2007 Report Posted February 5, 2007 (edited) seems that the combination US artists + European Artists + Small euro label is the big money combination... This would be my real first good business in records collecting: my Horo's realease. Funny enough if you think I bought most of them used and nm for 5/10 euros. I wish i bought more of them. brownie Posted February 5, 2007 Report Posted February 5, 2007 I had the occasion to buy the Oktav reissue. it was made by a Japanese dealer in Paris and his brother, around 2002-2003. He distributed some copies here and there in France. Yeah, I was in his shop and thought about getting it there. I think he was selling it fairly cheaply. Anyway the mentality of this guy prevents me from buying anything from him. Thay guy is Sawano. Never had problems with him. I knew where he was coming from and avoided getting some of his hot items. We made several interesting exchanges. Missed the vinyl reissue of the Shihab Oktav but grabbed the Oktav CD reissue as soon as it came out. Cost me a few euros only Sawano closed his Mobydisque shop on the Paris Left Bank a while ago. He is still searching for rare albums for Japanese collectors but is also now involved with real estate. Sawano's vinyl reissue of the René Urtreger Versailles is a beauty! I started buying albums more than half a century ago. I had the two Arvanitas Pretorias. Lost one of the covers and gave the vinyl to Arnaud Boubet as he was starting his current Paris Jazz Corner shop. Nothing much to it, Arnaud had been very helpful - and not greedy at all - when I met him when he was still selling his jazz records off one of the bouquiniste stands above the Seine River quais. That was 20 years ago! Quote

That was 20 years ago! Funny that PJC and those two Arvanitas LP's on Pretoria should be mentioned here ... I bought repro reissue of the Arvanitas "Cocktail for Three" album in 2000, liked it (still do) and wanted to get the other one ("3 AM") as well when I found out it was available as a reissue LP too. An internet link showed that PJC had it on their online website. Only drawback - they would have charged about as much as the price of the LP on top of it just for shipping. A bit hefty for a single item. Any inquiries as to whether it would be possible to pick it up in their shop (a brief visit to Paris was imminent, and a friend would have been available to collect the item beforehand anyway) the reply was a curt "NO" - cannot move items from their internet stocks to the shop, cannot organize things between those two branches and whatnot ... Very strange ... So the matter just faded away and that was that ... Quote

That was 20 years ago! Sahuano in real estate ? Not surprising. Boubet is a nice guy. Nothing to compare with the above stated. I certainly got my best Blue Note from him, and i'm glad that he had big sucess in PJC. Its well deserved I always buy my CD's and some LP's from their site, and at their shop whenever i go to Paris. I was young poor and ignorant when i started to have interest for Jazz, and its a particular field in which i met many older know-it-all who used to explain me that they were seated in front of Art blakey at the Club St germain in 58 while i was still resting in my father's balls... Boubet never had this attitude towards young customers like me, and i had access to many fine records thanks to him. Now that i'm old rich and knowledgeable i remember how Boubet helped me to start my collection with many fine records, that i still have, of course ! Quote

I took that route too and had the same problem The PJC website is a separate operation from the record shop even if they are linked. Did not want to pay shipping charges when I could have walked to their website operation to pick up the item I was looking for! Quote

I'm one of them and sat in front of Blakey at the Club St.Germain in 58. Was young, rather poor and rather ignorant at the time! I know how Boubet can be helpful! He is a class act Quote
porcy62 Posted February 5, 2007 Report Posted February 5, 2007 (edited) I bought only once from PJC. Three or four ECM albums. I payed all of them, but I received a parcel without one record. After my first complain about it, I got a mail back that stated that they will look into it. Never got any more answers from them. I lost 10 euros, they lost a customer. One of the few bad experience in my very short history of collector. Edited February 5, 2007 by porcy62 Quote

As Brownie said, the online shop is separated from their regular shop. Quote
sidewinder Posted February 6, 2007 Report Posted February 6, 2007 Lots of good experience with PJC. Their shipping is very reliable/sturdy and the condition of the LPs invariably first rate. Just one LP returned - a distorted Blue Note deep groove which they refunded immediately. Class act. Quote

As Brownie said, the online shop is separated from their regular shop. I had the same problem of the shop/site separation when I was in Paris. Trouble is, the site had reserved some items for me and told me to pick them up there! It was, naturally, a minor fiasco. Much later, I had the problem of paying 40 Euro for an item that they then sold to somebody else! I was credited, but it sort of soured me on the whole PJC thing... of course, up to then I had many positive experiences. Quote
brownie Posted February 15, 2007 Report Posted February 15, 2007 Incroyable Barney Wilen hits $2,950 Quote
sidewinder Posted February 15, 2007 Report Posted February 15, 2007 Incroyable Barney Wilen hits $2,950 Merchant bankers splurging bonuses, perhaps? Quote
michel1969 Posted February 15, 2007 Report Posted February 15, 2007 Anyway, this Barney Wilen is REALLY an impossible to find record. Not like those Blue Notes or Prestige you see each week on Ebay and always listed as a "lifetime opportunity". If one really wants it... Quote
brownie Posted February 15, 2007 Report Posted February 15, 2007 Anyway, this Barney Wilen is REALLY an impossible to find record. I have never seen a copy of the original album! Even thought it was not released in Europe, only in the States. Quote

Big Beat Steve Posted February 15, 2007 Report Posted February 15, 2007 Well, "Guilde du jazz" makes the (pressing) origin clear. I have seen at least one other copy before. I remember having downloaded (for archiving/documentation purposes) a cover pic of this album a couple of years ago when another copy came up for sale on eBay. Well outside my price range, of course (though not quite as expensive as this time ) ... It's the well-known "Euro-jazz syndrome" again. If it is European jazz from that time frame in decent condition and comes to the attention of bidders in certain Far East counties you as a seller will stand a good chance of getting rich quick ... michel1969 Posted February 16, 2007 Report Posted February 16, 2007 (edited) Good (?) price for Thelonious Monk. Obviously a second press Edited February 16, 2007 by Michel Quote
michel1969 Posted February 16, 2007 Report Posted February 16, 2007 On the other hand, a really rare and fine record that's worth nothing Quote
brownie Posted February 16, 2007 Report Posted February 16, 2007 Good (?) price for Thelonious Monk. Obviously a second press Looks like an original pressing! I have the same original since Riverside released this. My cover still has its original shine. The vinyl sounds real fine even it has been played a lot! Quote
michel1969 Posted February 16, 2007 Report Posted February 16, 2007 Well..; if you look at the LARGE riverside logo on bottom left... The first edition has the small "old style" with lines Riverside 12-262 contemporay series on top left. Same as from 218 to 274. Quote
michel1969 Posted February 16, 2007 Report Posted February 16, 2007 this one is the reissue, but has the original riverside logo. Quote
brownie Posted February 16, 2007 Report Posted February 16, 2007 this one is the reissue, but has the original riverside logo. Mais oui!!! The cover was not an original. The disc was! The cover of my original has the Jack Manning-Paul Bacon credit in small type at bottom right! Quote
michel1969 Posted February 16, 2007 Report Posted February 16, 2007 the five spot wall on the background is also seen on "Eric Dolphy at the five spot" !! Quote
jbs-tom Posted February 25, 2007 Report Posted February 25, 2007 look at this: this seller has 2 "buyers" who make him rich crazy ebay these 2 guys are bidding mostly on his records ... Quote
