I heard it includes "Prescription Murder" from 1968, the character's very first appearance. Got it for my Mom....they run these earlier ones now on Bravo, but nice to have them without the commercials....there were two pilot movies they say, the one from 1967, and then again in 1971! No extras sadly enough, but pretty nice all and all...can't wait for the next set!

neveronfriday
Does anyone know if there's a decent DVD of Silent Running (Douglas Trumbull, 1971)? Here in Europe we have one single catastrophic release (4:3 although the film was released 16:9, crummy sound, virtually no extras, etc.) What's the US version like (the 2nd one, released October 7, 2003)? Anyone have this version? Any others available? Cheers! Edited November 20, 2004 by deus62
BruceH
When I was in 6th grade, I read the noveliztion of Silent Running. When I finally saw it on TV I was a little disappointed...but that was TV, with commercials etc.
BERIGAN
Just pulled the trigger on the new Marx Brothers DVD box that's coming out Tuesday. Wagstaff: Members of the faculty, faculty members, students of Huxley and Huxley students - I guess that covers everything. Well, I thought my razor was dull until I heard this speech. And that reminds me of a story that's so dirty I'm ashamed to think of it myself. As I look over your eager faces, I can readily understand why this college is flat on its back. The last college I presided over, things were slightly different. I was flat on my back. Things kept going from bad to worse but we all put our shoulders to the wheel and it wasn't long before I was flat on my back again. Up.... Ghost, how was the quality????From the reviews I just read at amazon, sounds like a very weak set, with Horse Feathers still a choppy ass copy...I was going to get this set, and the W.C. Fields one, but now wondering if I should save my money in hopes of them someday doing these films right.... http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detai...?v=glance&s=dvd Edited November 28, 2004 by BERIGAN

I'm glad to have the films on DVD (we just watched MONKEY BUSINESS the other night), but nothing's been added... and though I haven't watched HORSE FEATHERS yet (an enormous favorite of mine), I've heard the same thing, that it's the same incomplete print that's circulated for many years. A shame, since RKO/MGM did a much better job with a weaker set of films--I guess Universal figures they can just trade in on the high quality of the movies themselves. When I was a kid, my parents regularly watched "CBS Sunday Night Mystery" (right title?), which featured Columbo, McCloud, McMillan and Wife, etc. I remember liking that show a lot, especially McCloud ("McCloud!"). Adam
Universal finally is issuing THE PALM BEACH STORY in a couple of weeks, but in a simple cheap version. They are still sitting on all the rest of the Sturges & Lubitsch films. I've been told by David Shepard that Universal is currently not licensing anything to anyone, so we probably won't see any more Sturges films done by Criterion, alas. And Unievrsal doesn't seem too concerned with doing nice editions of most of their older catalogue titles. A simple reissue on DVD of the Lubitsch laserdisc box set would be more than sufficient. Sigh I also wish Delicatessen would make it to NTSC DVD. There's a PAL version in Europe; I guess I should just get that. LAURA is finally coming out, 'tis true. The NBC Mystery Movie Thanks for the correction, Chaney. I have a weakness in general for 1970s PI series. My lazy side says that if I ever won the lottery, I wouldn't travel, etc.--I'd just quit my job and shack up with 1001 DVD sets and TVLand. MartyJazz
DREAM ON. Just got this box set for a birthday gift. It's a very funny series circa 1990-1 that premiered on HBO and used quite a lot of old TV footage that would be inserted to metaphorically describe the main character's state of mind at key points in each sketch. OK, you have to be there to get the humor. Well worth it.

Guest Chaney
I loved Kung Fu when I was a kid. Can't remember how many years the show ran (just checked: three seasons) but once Caine started getting laid in every other episode -- or so it seemed -- that was really when the show jumped the shark.
