rockefeller center
"Pescara '76" It is fluid and its usage of time shifts and plot twists is very natural and tastefully done, not looking like a gimmic, and is more of a way to benefit the story than to deceit the viewer. My November 9th suddenly got much brighter... Oh, that is good news. I think they were in print in the US for a short while, then were pulled. I actually paid a slight premium for these movies (minus Cocoanuts) from some guy who had stockpiled them. I hope there aren't too many extras on them. Now if the Harold Lloyd estate would finally start releasing his films (they are starting to show up on AMC which might be a good sign). My November 9th suddenly got much brighter... Hey Ghost, that's great news! Image put all these DVD's out several years ago and they had to pull all the May West, Marx Bros, and A&C films awhile back. I was wondering what was up with the Marx bros. films...I sure hope they don't slap the same battered prints on disc. Every copy of Horsefeathers is very choppy when Groucho is with Thelma Todd...lots o' dialog is missing with film...I wonder what the bonus disc will have on it? Man, you used to see the old dvds go for a pretty penny on ebay...at $59.95 retail, it is much higher than say the A&C sets (8 films for $21!) but dvdplanet.com has it listed for $41.97, so not too bad!!!! Where are the other Marxists???? Why are they not cheering this news??? Don't give me it's the weekend crap!
BERIGAN
.... Now if the Harold Lloyd estate would finally start releasing his films (they are starting to show up on AMC which might be a good sign). Several years ago back when AMC ran commercial free films, they ran quite a few of them...but now it is Turner that shows them...they still show one or two of them in the wee small hours of the AM...but yes, they need to be on dvd! They look great!
BruceH
I hear that none of Ron Howard's children have seen so much as an episode of Happy Days. Perhaps he should be congratulated for keeping his kids away from TV, but still....it's a little weird.
BERIGAN
I hear that none of Ron Howard's children have seen so much as an episode of Happy Days. Perhaps he should be congratulated for keeping his kids away from TV, but still....it's a little weird. Perhaps he doesn't let them watch them because of the raw sexual energy he had in his youth....that, or the full head of hair.....

BERIGAN
Adding to Ghost's info on the Marx bros...more good news! From the Digitalbits.com site, column by Barrie Maxwell... November 9th will see two long-time requests start to be addressed with the release of The W.C. Fields Comedy Collection (includes The Bank Dick, International House, It's a Gift, My Little Chickadee and You Can't Cheat an Honest Man) and The Marx Brothers Silver Screen Collection (includes Animal Crackers, The Cocoanuts, Duck Soup, Horse Feathers and Monkey Business). The Marx Brothers set will also include a sixth disc of supplements (details not available as yet). Then on December 7th, Universal will give us Howard Hughes' Hell's Angels (1930, with Ben Lyon and Jean Harlow). It reportedly includes the Technicolor sequences. Surprises never cease! Universal has also been busy on the TV front with complete first season sets of Night Gallery and The Munsters due on August 24th and the first season of Alfred Hitchcock Presents planned for later in the fall. http://www.thedigitalbits.com/articles/bar...well080204.html

Free For All
I picked up an interesting DVD the other day- Lee Konitz live at the Vanguard (with Roland Hanna, George Mraz and Mel Lewis). It looks like it was from around 1984, and the audio producer was Malcolm Addey (audio and video quality were excellent). The big suprise was some footage of Konitz from 1954 with Warne Marsh, Don Elliott, Mundell Lowe, Billy Taylor and Ed Thigpen (plus a bass player who was unidentified). Good stuff. Apparently this is part of a series- the box mentioned more becoming available soon. Has this been discussed before?
Big Wheel
WOW. Did they say if the series was to include only other Vanguard dates, or was it broader in scope?
Free For All
It looks to be a live-at-the-Vanguard series. Other sessions mentioned were Michel Petrucciani w/Jim Hall and John Abercrombie w/Michael Brecker. The Konitz was labeled "Volume 5" but I got the impression they might not be releasing them in order. We shall see!

sal
A couple of classics are making their way to DVD in September. Hitchcock's "Strangers on a Train" is being released in a 2 disc special edition on September 7. And on September 21, Fellini's "La Dolce Vita" is getting the 2 disc deluxe treatment as well. I'll be picking up both for sure!
