undergroundagent Posted December 31, 2003 Report Posted December 31, 2003 Name a board member in the last year (or since you've begun posting on Organissimo) that has helped further your knowledge of jazz (then give them bonus pattywacks). My vote is a tie to: Tom (Rooster Ties), Lon (jazzbo) & Jim (Jsngry). Thanks, gents! Quote
jazzbo Posted December 31, 2003 Report Posted December 31, 2003 It's Jim and David (GOM) and Johnny E (extracirricular activities) and Harold Z and Ubu and Couw and. . . well there are a lot of them, you've all contributed, thanks so much for a good part of the good part of the year! Quote
PHILLYQ Posted December 31, 2003 Report Posted December 31, 2003 Kudos to Chris Albertson(I ordered your Bessie bio on Tuesday), Jim Sangrey(You hipped me to some James Brown that knocked my socks off!), Jazzmooze(Perspicacity & perspective- say that five times fast!), Rooster Ties(All around good guy on the board), DEEP(Great stories!), Patricia(Ms. Nickname), and many others that have helped me to know more & appreciate more about this wonderful music. Another set of kudos to the political posters, Berigan, Johnny E., Ghost of Miles, Chris A.(again), Dan Gould(baseball, also) & many more, for an interesting, contentious, but frequently civil discourse on many topics. chris olivarez Posted December 31, 2003 Report Posted December 31, 2003 I feel that I've learned something from just about everyone on this board. Quote
catesta Posted December 31, 2003 Report Posted December 31, 2003 The board in general helps me immensely. I thank everyone that I have purchased music from (you know who you are), or that has made recommendations. Dmitry has really gone out of his way for me this last year and I appreciate the hell out of it. More special thanks to Chris Albertson, Jim Sangrey, Chuck, Weizen, Lon, Conn, AB, the people over at Sony music, my management group, all my homies, Chaka Khan for appearing in my video, Elizabeth Hurley..... Seriously, I'll say it again, I am thankful to this board and for all that participate. Quote
Jazzmoose Posted December 31, 2003 Report Posted December 31, 2003 Wow...a tough call to narrow it down; I'm new enough at this that I learn every time I come here, but I'll mention Dan Gould and J.A.W. for their help in allowing me to hear music that I otherwise wouldn't have been able to hear. Joe G Posted December 31, 2003 Report Posted December 31, 2003 (edited) Sangrey (the Master), Rooster Tom (for classical), Free For All (musician insider stuff) and honorable mentions to just about everyone else. Drinks for all my friends! And big thank you's go to Rockafeller Center and Rachel for the CD-Rs. Edit: Had to add Trumpet Guy for sending me a copy of his cd as well! connoisseur series500 Posted January 1, 2004 Report Posted January 1, 2004 Great idea, Underground. The fear here is that names will be left out. Rooster ranks high on my list. He's been a huge help both in terms of trades and advice. Jacknife's my favorite trading partner. He boomerangs the nonsense back the way I like it too! Thanks Knife! You da Man!!! Jim Sangry has helped with advice on the board with his comments. The guy's an encyclopedia. Couw sent me some great stuff. Thanks JOhn!! Thanks to Dan for starting the blindfold concept and thanks to those who sent me the discs. Catesta, thanks for the laughs; Weizy, thanks for keeping Johnny in check...oh, this was about music wasn't it? Jim (B-3er) has been a big help in terms of organ-jazz recommendations. Ditto Soul Stream. Thanks to Grey for his bargain offerings. I actually won the pm race for a couple of cds over the course of the year. Lon has been a big help in this area as well. Abution has been terrific. Made a bunch of trades with him over the year, and I've benefitted from his suggestions. Tjazz: thanks for your help also. You've been extremely helpful. Thanks also to DoubleM for some good trades. Same goes for Saint Vitus. Underground has also helped me out with soul-jazz ideas. We may not share the same tastes, but there are some cds that we both like!! I'm sure, I still left people out... Quote
brownie Posted January 1, 2004 Report Posted January 1, 2004 This Board has been the best gathering place I've ever been to. I like the people and the spirit here. Thanks to everyone for sharing your knowledge, your thoughts, your views and opinions. Can't believe this place got started less than a year ago! Quote
Claude Posted January 1, 2004 Report Posted January 1, 2004 (edited) - Jim Alfredson (b3-er) for setting up and managing this board - John (Couw) for making those indispensable booklets for the Zweitausendeins Fantasy box sets - Hans (J.A.W.) for keeping us updated on the latest japansese reissues (I still haven't ordered some yet, but it's reassuring they exist ) - Chris Albertson (Christiern) and Johnny E. for posting interesting articles in the Politics forum (but some of Berigan's and Dan Gould's post were quite useful too ) - Michel Devos, the only board member that I've had the pleasure to meet in person Thanks and happy new year Edited January 1, 2004 by Claude Quote
7/4 Posted January 1, 2004 Report Posted January 1, 2004 I can't name a specific board member, but it's a great hang. I am listening to more jazz these days. Quote
Dan Gould Posted January 1, 2004 Report Posted January 1, 2004 A great idea! I would have to say major thanks to Chris A. for his considerable professional help with the Eddie Higgins interview and especially the upcoming Weinstock interview. And thanks to Lon for those little and not so little surprises he keeps sending my way! And to B-3er for setting up and maintaining such a welcoming, hip place ... ****************** But Paul, Thanks to Dan for starting the blindfold concept isn't quite accurate. Let's not forget that it was Dr. J, Tony Jerant who expressed the original idea. I just kept nudging it until it came to fruition! Quote
Uncle Skid Posted January 1, 2004 Report Posted January 1, 2004 brownie said it well – this is a great Internet community. For me, it's been a great place to learn all kinds of new things about jazz, and also to be turned on to some great new music that I probably wouldn't have heard of otherwise. It's really nice (especially when living in an area where there aren't very many jazz fans) to be able to read and discuss things with knowledgeable people from all over the world. Thanks for putting this all together, b3-er! Special thanks to Chuck Nessa for “Snurdy McGurdy”. The music is fantastic, and being able to hear and discuss it with him in person was wonderful. Chuck's hospitality was much appreciated. Also, a big “thank you” to Joe G. for inviting me to a terrific concert, and for his help and advice on my guitar playing. Last, but definitely not least, I'm deeply indebted to Upright Bill for introducing me to jazz, and also to the challenging and rewarding world of jazz guitar. -- Mark Quote
Jazzmoose Posted January 1, 2004 Report Posted January 1, 2004 Let's not forget that it was Dr. J, Tony Jerant who expressed the original idea. Dr. J is Tony Jerant? I'll be damned...I've got to start keeping a scorecard! Quote
Peter Johnson Posted January 1, 2004 Report Posted January 1, 2004 You guys all kick ass! I've learned a hell of a lot from everyone and developed some nice friendships in the process. Special thanks to Jim for getting the party started, Dan for a super-generous act, and Tom for hipping me to Henze! Can't wait to meet some of y'all in person! Quote
couw Posted January 2, 2004 Report Posted January 2, 2004 Thanks to everyone on this board. For keeping this place so darn civilised. Even through the sometimes heated debates and in spite of some misplaced words or nasty remarks, this place has provided an incredibly fertile ground for discussions and a whole lot of fun. And I think we all deserve a little friendly backslapping for that. Special mention of the moment goes to the trio currently sweating to make my BFT work: Dan Gould, Jim Dye, and Tom in RI. And to JSngry for his assistence in my BFT. Thank you very much, you kind gentlemen. Quote
