Durium Posted January 29, 2011 Report Posted January 29, 2011 This weekend Roy Eldridge, Mr. Little Jazz, was born 100 years ago. This great trumpet player, now almost forgotten, could be labelled as the link between the older generation of trumpet players and the beboppers like Dizzy Gillespie, Howard McGhee and Clifford Brown. Big Beat Steve Posted January 29, 2011 Report Posted January 29, 2011 Thanks for the reminder. Not long ago I obtained a s.h. copy of the Mosaic box featuring the complete Verve recordings by Little Jazz. Time to give it a more exhaustive spin ... Quote
sidewinder Posted January 29, 2011 Report Posted January 29, 2011 The (Euro) Mosaic set will be spinning today in recognition of this great artist ! Quote

Hardbopjazz Posted January 29, 2011 Report Posted January 29, 2011 There so much celebration going on in the world for his 100th birthday. Too bad this isn’t true. Happy 100 "Little Jazz." Quote
Peter Friedman Posted January 29, 2011 Report Posted January 29, 2011 One of the great trumpet players in jazz history. I still recall seeing a trumpet battle between Roy Eldridge and Charlie Shavers at a JATP Concert in Detroit in circa 1953 or 54. This was one of the first jazz concerts I ever attended. I recommend this biography. Roy Eldridge : Little Jazz Giant by John Chilton Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted January 29, 2011 Report Posted January 29, 2011 I have fond memories and miss him. He was a MF! And for years he's kept my pants up. Quote
king ubu Posted January 30, 2011 Report Posted January 30, 2011 Love Roy Eldridge! The Mosaic was a revelation in many respects! Also the Paris 1950 recordings are pretty good... and some later Pablo stuff, too! And the trumpet/drum duos done for Granz are a fine proof (if any is needed!) of how adventuresome a musician Roy was! Quote
brownie Posted January 30, 2011 Report Posted January 30, 2011 Today is the day Little Jazz would have been 100! Nothing little about his music. That came from a giant who always delivered! Quote

king ubu Posted January 30, 2011 Report Posted January 30, 2011 That's great, Jim! Anyone knows where this comes from? Quote
king ubu Posted January 30, 2011 Report Posted January 30, 2011 It says 1961... and an excerpt on youtube says it's a commercial that wanted to animate people to place commercials in jazz films? Huh? Quote
brownie Posted January 30, 2011 Report Posted January 30, 2011 More from the same film Roy has to wait until the end of the sequence to blow... Quote
sidewinder Posted January 30, 2011 Report Posted January 30, 2011 Issued on Rhapsody Films. A priceless gem ! After Hours DVD Quote
