David Ayers Posted January 22, 2011 Report Posted January 22, 2011 At the risk of starting an internet rumor... I heard that Mole Jazz is back in some form somewhere in Soho... but I can't get any confirmation... and it doesn't quite seem right... Quote
sidewinder Posted January 22, 2011 Report Posted January 22, 2011 (edited) Weren't they still operating in some form at Harold Moore's Records, Gt Marlborough St? (the place with no notice on the door, hazardous door-knob and secret password to get in). They were here the last time I visited, in the upstairs bit - after the closure they moved downstairs into the main store I think (haven't visited). Well, I guess it is a major recession and Ed Dipple originally started by mail order 1974/75 so the timing is right ! In fact, Mole at their peak was in the early 80s recession. Haven't heard anything of this rumour, by the way. Great Marlborough St is on the edge of Soho, so that could be the source of the rumour. (Mole's original site at Kings Cross pre-redevelopment (if it ever happens) Edited January 22, 2011 by sidewinder Quote
David Ayers Posted January 22, 2011 Author Report Posted January 22, 2011 Well I thought that the Mole section at Harold Moore's had gone. My friend received an email about Mole but I doubt he still has it. So either this is just Mole is back at Harold Moores, or maybe never left, or it is a new venture. Dunno. When I visited the Mole section at HM's it didn't have much life in it - that's some years ago. Quote

A Lark Ascending Posted January 22, 2011 Report Posted January 22, 2011 Love your new avatar, David! Must get round to the post office for some of those! Brought back memories to me too - I loved Supercar, Fireball XL5 and Stingray. By the time of Thunderbirds I was a 'sophisticated' 11 year old who treated it with a sneer, suitable only for my younger brothers and sister. Quote
David Ayers Posted January 22, 2011 Author Report Posted January 22, 2011 As you know I generally dislike nostalgia (Bev!) but in this case I have given in... Quote
sidewinder Posted January 22, 2011 Report Posted January 22, 2011 (edited) We need a set of stamps with UK jazz vinyl ex-shops on them. I suggest:- Mole, Dobells, Rays (the original), Honest Jons (Camden) and James Asman. Edited January 22, 2011 by sidewinder Quote

A Lark Ascending Posted January 23, 2011 Report Posted January 23, 2011 Decoy was great! Didn't get there often but when I did... Also Eric Rose's 'Music Inn' in Nottingham - more at the Stan Kenton/big band end of things but you could chance on things you'd never find in the main shops. Quote
sidewinder Posted January 24, 2011 Report Posted January 24, 2011 And not forgetting Peter Russell's Hot Record Store in Plymouth, which definitely deserves a stamp. One of the few jazz specialists in the West Country back in the day ! Quote
JohnS Posted January 24, 2011 Report Posted January 24, 2011 and Chris Wellard in S.E.London Yes, Chris, a great guy and the shop a haven for collectors and musicians in SE London. He used to run an excellent record recital club in the pub opposite the shop. If I can find a photo of Chris outside the shop I'll post it. Quote
sidewinder Posted January 24, 2011 Report Posted January 24, 2011 (edited) I remember seeing adverts for the Chris Wellard shop (Streatham?) and seeing notices in JJI that it was closing down but never visited, sadly. Another one to offer up - that 'Jazz & Big Band Record Centre' in the centre of Birmingham near the old Bull Ring. Not sure exactly what it was called. That place was Kenton & Herman Heaven. And thinking about it, even remote outposts like Weymouth had a shop with decent jazz collection back in the day ! Edited January 24, 2011 by sidewinder Quote
Steve Gray Posted January 24, 2011 Report Posted January 24, 2011 Chris Wellard's was in New Cross. The Streatham Shop was Dave Carey's Swing Shop, they used to advertise on the inside back page of Jazz Journal. It wasn't much more than a cubby hole, I remember well buying 'New York Eye and Ear Control' and some Excello blues LPs there. Quote

I went to Trent polytechnic in the late 1980s - was that shop there then? Not that I'd have gone in - I spent almost all my time at Selectadisc. I went to Nottingham last summer, and was shocked to see it had shut down. Quote

It relocated into an indoor alley in the late 90s but I can't imagine its still there. Quote
crisp Posted January 24, 2011 Report Posted January 24, 2011 If "last man standing" HMV goes the way of Tower, Virgin and Zavvi, I suspect we might see a revival of the independent, specialist record shop. Big stores can't beat the web on prices, but a well-run indie could certainly outdo the internet on knowledge, stock and overall service. Quote

The customer area was tiny, two were a crowd but they had a lot of good things and were extremely knowledgeable. Unfortunately it wasn't the easiest place to get to from where I lived in Kent. Re I remeber buying Sun Ra's Heliocentric Worlds Vol 2 there as well as Ornette at the Golden Circle. Quote

Never was there (before my time ...) but that description somehow sounds very much like what I remember of my visits to Dobell's on Charing Cross Road in 1975/76/77. Quote

Dobell's was big compared to Carey's Steve, it was like being in a large telephone booth. For those of you who remember Chrsi Wellard and his New Cross shop here's picture I too back in the day. Chris is on the left. Sadly I've forgotten the name of his colleague here. Quote
