(the place with no notice on the door, hazardous door-knob and secret password to get in). They were here the last time I visited, in the upstairs bit - after the closure they moved downstairs into the main store I think (haven't visited). Well, I guess it is a major recession and Ed Dipple originally started by mail order 1974/75 so the timing is right ! In fact, Mole at their peak was in the early 80s recession. Haven't heard anything of this rumour, by the way. Great Marlborough St is on the edge of Soho, so that could be the source of the rumour. Brought back memories to me too - I loved Supercar, Fireball XL5 and Stingray. By the time of Thunderbirds I was a 'sophisticated' 11 year old who treated it with a sneer, suitable only for my younger brothers and sister. Quote

He used to run an excellent record recital club in the pub opposite the shop. If I can find a photo of Chris outside the shop I'll post it. Quote
sidewinder Posted January 24, 2011 Report Posted January 24, 2011 (edited) I remember seeing adverts for the Chris Wellard shop (Streatham?) and seeing notices in JJI that it was closing down but never visited, sadly. Another one to offer up - that 'Jazz & Big Band Record Centre' in the centre of Birmingham near the old Bull Ring. Not sure exactly what it was called. That place was Kenton & Herman Heaven. I went to Nottingham last summer, and was shocked to see it had shut down. Yes, but it was up on Canning Circus, on the way to 'The Park'. On Alfreton Road heading towards Hyson Green. It relocated into an indoor alley in the late 90s but I can't imagine its still there. Quote

Big stores can't beat the web on prices, but a well-run indie could certainly outdo the internet on knowledge, stock and overall service. Quote

Re I remeber buying Sun Ra's Heliocentric Worlds Vol 2 there as well as Ornette at the Golden Circle. Quote

Dobell's was big compared to Carey's Steve, it was like being in a large telephone booth.For those of you who remember Chrsi Wellard and his New Cross shop here's picture I too back in the day.
