tranemonk Posted January 22, 2011 Report Posted January 22, 2011 I have it and that's not my experience of it. I too am curious about this set. What I am afraid of is that the set will be mostly drum solos with some insertions of music in between. Quote
Face of the Bass Posted January 22, 2011 Report Posted January 22, 2011 I've been noticing that resale value on OOP Mosaics is significantly less than it was a few years ago. They still sell for a premium, but the days of 2-3 times the original cost seem to be gone. There are a few exceptions, of course - like Thad/Mel and Maynard. Yeah, I've noticed this too. On EBay now part of the problem is that a lot of the Mosaic boxes get posted with only a "Buy It Now" option and the price tends to be ridiculously high, like $285 or something like that. It's somewhat rare when a box actually goes to auction. Still, I feel I was lucky to score the Lee/Christy set for just $90, not really much more than it cost when it was in print (and possibly less once you factor in shipping) but in that case I think the seller made the mistake of not putting the word "Mosaic" in the title. I usually do a "Mosaic" search to see what boxes are out there, but in this particular instance I was specifically looking for the Lee/Christy, so I did that search and the box came up. But I imagine the seller lost a lot of potential page-views by not putting the word "Mosaic" in the title. That said, it kind of makes sense that the prices would come down. The market for these kinds of niche sets is not unlimited. Quote
jazzbo Posted January 22, 2011 Report Posted January 22, 2011 I have it and that's not my experience of it. I too am curious about this set. What I am afraid of is that the set will be mostly drum solos with some insertions of music in between. Nor mine. This is a good set. Yeah, I was a drummer and maybe I enjoy the drumming aspects a bit more than others may, but there is much swinging jazz here to get excited about. I truly like this eet more than I expected to, and am glad I've had it a few years. Quote

sidewinder Posted January 25, 2011 Report Posted January 25, 2011 Damn - why did the £ have to drop 2 cents today, just as I need to get the Rich. Quote
colinmce Posted January 25, 2011 Report Posted January 25, 2011 I think a piece of my tax return is going toward the Johnny Smith. Quote

king ubu Posted January 25, 2011 Report Posted January 25, 2011 Ouch, this is hard! Both on my wantlist... the Rich somewhat higher up, I think, but I'm not even sure. Quote
7/4 Posted January 25, 2011 Report Posted January 25, 2011 I should get the the Johnny Smith set. I've been putting it off because I didn't want to spend the money, which is silly because I spent even more at J&R Music just a few weeks ago. Nothing stopped me then! Quote
golfcrazy1984 Posted January 25, 2011 Author Report Posted January 25, 2011 I knew the Rich was running low but the Johnny Smith too?!?! Well, I have put myself on a self-imposed Mosaic hiatus until May. I may have to abridge that plan, if the Johnny Smith Roost set goes to last chance before then I will be getting it. Quote
J.A.W. Posted January 25, 2011 Report Posted January 25, 2011 I'd recommend the Johnny Smith set. Quote
golfcrazy1984 Posted January 25, 2011 Author Report Posted January 25, 2011 I'd recommend the Johnny Smith set. I have the Buddy Rich and Woody Herman set on order, they are arriving on Thursday I have no Johnny Smith recordings, but the sidemen look good and I've heard GREAT things about him as a musician. Plus, I do not like to loose a set to the out-of-print "abyss" through my inaction. Quote
tranemonk Posted January 25, 2011 Report Posted January 25, 2011 I have the Johnny Smith set... I would say it's good not great... It does get a fair amount of play in my house.... Not close to the Farlow but a good set nonetheless. Quote
Face of the Bass Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 No interest in the Rich set, but the Johnny Smith has me curious, but no audio samples on the Mosaic site? Quote
David Ayers Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 Johnny Smith is a *great* guitarist - whether you want this big box set of mainly quartet recordings is another matter (I don't have it myself) but if you hear any of his stuff he'll soon have you wondering what you ever heard in uhh other guitarists who keep getting name-checked around these parts. Quote
GA Russell Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 The one Mosaic box currently available from them that I want most of all is the Johnny Smith. Next would be the Ahmad Jamal. Quote
J.A.W. Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 No interest in the Rich set, but the Johnny Smith has me curious, but no audio samples on the Mosaic site? Maybe they didn't get permission from Capitol/EMI. Quote

Bright Moments Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 Man, this thread exemplifies everything that's tremendous about this forum. you can't go wrong with either set. I am a bit surprised that the rich is already running low - it has not been out that long. Quote

7/4 Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 The legendary Johnny Smith is always described as an amazing musician that does impossible things on the guitar. There's been a discussion about him on the Yahoo Jazz guitar list for the last few days. Quote
GA Russell Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 I listened to everything lala had of Johnny Smith. I've also found a couple of albums at grooveshark. Quote
Face of the Bass Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 Just heard a Smith recording from the mid 1950s, and damn, I can't keep going back to the well to get yet another Mosaic set, but I can already feel the pull... Quote
