This seems like a appropriate place to ask : What happened to the tapes found by Ravi in the Coltrane Home Loft?

Did I imagine this?

A few years ago Ravi found some tapes in his loft and was going to put them up for auction.

They were not actually auctioned, they were bought privately before the auction. UMG were believed to be the buyers.

Was the result of this just the things issued on the 2cd sets of 'Coltrane' and "Ballads'?

I was hoping there was lot more.

I believe there is a thread that lists the contents from the loft find in great detail somewhere on this site. I searched recently for it but could not find anything. Maybe someone else will have better luck? I seem to remember quite a bit a material being listed.

There is also tentative plans for two-fer reissues of Gil Evans' 'Out of the Cool' with 'Into the Hot,' Art Blakey's 'Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers' with 'A Jazz Message,' Freddie Hubbard's 'The Artistry of Freddie Hubbard' with 'The Body and the Soul,' Charles Mingus' Black Saint and the Sinner Lady' with 'Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus,' Gabor Szabo's 'The Sorcerer' with 'More Sorcery' and Ahmad Jamal's 'Freeflight' with 'Outertimeinnerspace.' Also discussed in general terms by the label is a new unreleased in live date from John Coltrane—hopefully, it will be closer in sound quality an old radio broadcast released as 'One Up, One Down' than 'The Olatunji Concert,' which sounded like it was recorded inside a metal box. There will also be another box set toward the end of the year, but at this point no one is willing to say what it will include.

Where dat from?

The Jamal might be of interest, the parts from "More Sorcery" that were taken from the same live sessions as "The Sorcerer" were added to the Master Edition reissue (which I got fairly recently - it's great!), the remaining parts of "More Sorcery" are from the 1967 Monterey Jazz Festival (with Bill Goodwin instead of Marty Morrell on drums).

Not sure I'd buy that again just for these three tunes (they're "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds", "Spellbinder" and "Comin' Back").

The Coltrane sounds exciting - but is it just unreleased but well-known (widely circulated) or really something new, a gig that was not known to have been taped or anything? Even in the first case, I'd be all over an official release and possible sonic upgrade, but the second case would be much more exciting of course!

[re: The Complete Africa/Brass Sessions]

I don't understand something. This release on Impulse was supposed to the complete Africa/Brass Sessions. Today Impuse/Verve released three previous unreleased takes from this session. Is this a marketing ploy by the label? Surely these three takes were known about. Now the collector that wants it all has to shell out more money when these takes could have fit on the aboved mentioned release.

This is the note from Verve Records.

"The label’s search for rarities yielded a truly remarkable discovery: unheard and never before available performances by John Coltrane, the leading light of the Impulse Record label. The three tracks were originally recorded in a demo session exactly fifty years ago – sometime in early 1961 – for Africa/Brass, Coltrane’s groundbreaking debut album on Impulse Records, and present Coltrane soloing in the company an all-star ensemble heavy on reeds and brass."

Which release exactly are you talking about? There have been several issues of these sessions over the years. Perhaps you could mention the CD catalogue number and the year of release (should be printed somewhere on the cover or CDs).

My copy was issued in 1990 MCA 42001. The release today I don't know the catalog number. I just read it on the Impulse web site and they don't offer a catalog number.

Link to Impulse's release note

My point is, if these were in the vault and known about, then the other releases were not true statements.

Previous thread HERE, including link to another article with more details. My understanding is that they were 'demos' (or perhaps 'early rehearsals' might be more accurate), recorded prior to the actual sessions -- and they may have previously been unknown to have existed.

Impulse! has released a lot of "complete" Coltrane collections based on what was in the vaults. But the Coltrane family has a lot of tapes of music not in the vaults. As I understand, that has been the primary source of the new material that has appeared in the last few decades.

I just listened to the 30 second samples - sounds a bit shaky, just like a first rehearsal. I'm not sure I need them, and if the track timings are accurate, I certauínly won't buy the box set just for these.

Is anyone buying the new Hip-o-Select 4 cd Creed Taylor Impulse collection just for these 3 tracks, which total about 8 or 9 minutes?

I don't think so. As usual with Hip-O sets, this one is expensive, $79.98 for 4 discs.

Apart from the price, this looks a really cool set. If anyone is interested I suggest they sit on their hands for a while and wait for the price to come down..it usually does! I'm very impressed with the couple of Hip-O jazz sets I've bought, both very nicely done.

I certainly will not by the box, but hope the tracks are made available on iTunes or Amazon downloads.

Bertrand.

Here ya go: http://www.amazon.com/Impulse-50-First-Taylor-Collection/dp/B004VRIEYM/ref=sr_1_1_digr?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1303388384&sr=1-1

But look at the track timings of those last three tracks in the set!

It looks like at the moment, you can buy some of the mp3s separately (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0042KZJ4Q?ie=UTF8&tag=vermusgro-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B0042KZJ4Q) and these last 3 are currently available as stand-alones, so that would be the route I would go (and I might download them but am not exactly chomping at the bit). Probably better to do this sooner than later in case they change it around.

It looks like somebody up there may have read your post. In a matter of minutes, they have already become "album only" downloads.

Are you sure? When I look, the last three tracks of CD 4 still seem to be stand-alone tracks. Of course, I haven't actually tried to buy them, since I couldn't download them now anyway (have to be this evening). I'm not talking about the longer tracks that are part of the album proper.

Sorry, I'm a bit slow today... so it's just the final three cuts, huh? Hm...

Yeah, just the final three cuts of CD 4 for the Coltrane demos. While this music is fantastic of course, this definitely strikes me as just about the most superfluous box set I've ever seen. It looks like 6 complete albums (all very available) and then the 3 demos. I believe any other bonus tracks have already been released, as on the Complete Africa Brass.

And all albums everyone already has anyway... Gil Evans' magnificient "Out of the Cool", "Africa/Brass" (at least all of it is in there! For those having the recent "Impulse Original" single disc, they get the full 2CD "Impulse Master Sessions" digipack contents, and that's one great reissue!), "The Blues and the Abstract Truth"... the one I don't yet have is the Ray Charles, but there's a 2CD edition of it out now, adding "My Kind of Jazz", "My Kind of Jazz II", & "My Kind of Jazz III".

The Kai Winding album seems to be the rarest of the bunch: The Incredible Kai Winding Trombones.

But then I guess it's also the least interesting of the bunch.

Double and triple hmmmms...

As for most unneeded box sets, Coltrane Legacy runs a close second... a full four discs of well-known Trane, with ONE rarity, namely the entire 1965 set from which only "Nature Boy" had previously been available (CD4#4).

wait; if no one's ever heard them, how do we know they are Coltrane?

I downloaded them from Amazon and I heard them...

...and I still don't know if it's Coltrane.

You can almost tell that it's him on Laura.
