TedR Posted March 11, 2004 Report Posted March 11, 2004 So there were two Shirley Shirleys? Shirley you jest Quote
jazzbo Posted March 11, 2004 Report Posted March 11, 2004 I haven't heard this one yet, though I am enjoying a few live NoJo boots. On the only other board I frequent (not a jazz board) regularly, they talk of distortion on "Feel Like Home"---one person says he's had three or four copies from different sources and it's not a defect of just one copy or so. Anyone else have information about distorted sound? Quote

jazzbo Posted March 11, 2004 Report Posted March 11, 2004 They say overall distortion, overdriven/too hot recording. Quote
Dr. Rat Posted March 11, 2004 Report Posted March 11, 2004 (edited) They say overall distortion, overdriven/too hot recording. I didn't notice this, but I listened to it on my computer then I turned it over to the folk guy. I thought her voice was a too upfront, maybe (very close miked), but I didn't notice distortion. Perhaps the guys got a little crazy with the compressor--if these folks (the people complaining of distortion) aren't used ot pop recordings, they may not be used to that, and I should imagine Jones is getting the full pop treatment, for good and ill, and one of the ills is the liberal use of dynamic compression, which would be particularly annoying on this sort of recording, I think. But I won't have the disc back until next week, --eric Edited March 11, 2004 by Dr. Rat Quote
Claude Posted March 23, 2004 Report Posted March 23, 2004 (edited) I bought the european copyprotected CD for a friend (I had warned him ). This is the first copyprotected CD I was able to test. I played on my Sony SACD player (SCD-XA777ES). The recording quality is not great (very studio-processed), but I didn't notice any anomaly related to errors on the disc. But in my Philips DVD/SACD player DVD963SA it produced clicking noises throughout every track and was unlistenable. (BTW, I found the music to be dead boring and completely free of any jazz element). I know people who only have this popular player for their CDs. They would have been screwed with this copyprotected disc. I then put the CD into one of my PC drives, an older ACER CD-RW 12x burner, and installed the software player from the CD. The compressed files are 128kbs Windows Media files. It's the Macrovision CDS200 protection scheme. Now comes the odd part: I started my CD grabbing software Easy CD-DA Extractor 6.5 (not a piracy tool) and was able to see all the audio tracks on the CD, as well as a data track. The audio tracks could all be grabbed normally, and sounded fine. No clicking noises. So the copy protection was completely non functional on this CD drive. If my friend for who I bought the CD has problems playing it I will be able to burn him a clean copy. This would be an illegal act But on my Pioneer DVD drive, only the first track showed as an audio track within the grabber interface, the other as data tracks. When I grabbed the first track everything went normal until 99% of the process, then the drive locked completely up and I couldn't get the CD out. I had to reboot my PC. So it seems that the copy protection works well on DVD drives, but can easily be defeated by some CD-R burner drives. Because of the playability problems of CDS200 disc on my DVD player I will not buy any european EMI CDs. Edited March 23, 2004 by Claude Quote

chris olivarez Posted May 26, 2004 Report Posted May 26, 2004 (edited) Dr. Rat it's probably by necessity that she's upfront in the mix. No disrespect intended but she doesn't have the most powerful pipes in the world and if you put her further down in the mix you might not find her again. Edited May 27, 2004 by chris olivarez Quote

Shawn Posted June 1, 2004 Report Posted June 1, 2004 I like the album myself, have only spun it a couple times but it's got a nice vibe to it. It ain't jazz...just well produced folk-pop, but she's got a killer voice and a "presence" that you don't hear in many singers her age.... Quote
mikeweil Posted June 4, 2004 Report Posted June 4, 2004 So it seems that the copy protection works well on DVD drives, but can easily be defeated by some CD-R burner drives. Yesterday a friend of mine told me he never has any trouble copying protected CDs when using an old version of Nero Burning Room from 1998 or '99 - the problems could be at least partially caused by the newer burning software that comes with DVD burners. mikeweil Posted June 4, 2004 Report Posted June 4, 2004 Sorry if anybody already mentioned it, but it is simply too much too read all of this thread .... Has anybody seen the video clip? I think it is downright silly - sort of fairy tale scenery with the band strumming fake intruments, the two singers in front of a pond ... that clip alone can keep me from buying the CD. Quote
robviti Posted June 4, 2004 Report Posted June 4, 2004 funny, i had the exact opposite reaction. i found the whimsical mood of the video with its cartoon-like scenery (including a cardboard acoustic bass!) a welcome relief from the usual all-so-serious narcissistic videos i typically see. Quote
JSngry Posted June 5, 2004 Report Posted June 5, 2004 So, what kind of chart action is this thing showing? Does it have legs? Quote
chris olivarez Posted June 5, 2004 Report Posted June 5, 2004 Its getting a lot of play on AC stations so I guess the answer is yes. Quote
Shawn Posted June 5, 2004 Report Posted June 5, 2004 (edited) Well, according to Billboard it's still in the top 20 and it's sold over 4 million copies....so it's got quite a few legs evidently. Edited June 5, 2004 by Shawn Quote

mikeweil Posted June 16, 2004 Report Posted June 16, 2004 a welcome relief from the usual all-so-serious narcissistic videos i typically see. You're absolutely right about this, but something seems so thoroughly unprofessional about the whole thing: Is that really her? As narcistic as most clips are, at least they give the impression that it is what they want to do. Not that much of them is perfectly calculated. Quote
Swinging Swede Posted June 16, 2004 Report Posted June 16, 2004 I read that Norah will be guesting on the new Ray Charles album that comes out in August. As will Diana Krall, btw. Quote
