skeith Posted January 14, 2011 Report Posted January 14, 2011 Does anyone know if this is being released. I thought I read something about it on a thread, but can't find it. Is it a good performance - for those who are familiar with it? Quote
JSngry Posted January 14, 2011 Report Posted January 14, 2011 Great performance. Don't know about the official release, though. Quote
medjuck Posted January 14, 2011 Report Posted January 14, 2011 I have it on a Japanese Sony release. I'm not as big a fan of Miles after Bitch's Brew as I am of his earlier work so I'm not a good judge but I do think it's pretty good. Quote
Guy Berger Posted January 14, 2011 Report Posted January 14, 2011 It's a great performance without a doubt - as is the concert recorded the following day. The last recordings on which there is significant representation of material Miles recorded with the 50s and 60s quintets. Quote
skeith Posted January 14, 2011 Author Report Posted January 14, 2011 Thanks Guys, but was there something here on the Board about it coming out officially in the US, or was that just a dream? Quote
GA Russell Posted January 14, 2011 Report Posted January 14, 2011 skeith, I think you are referring to this: http://www.amazon.com/Bitches-Brew-LIVE-Miles-Davis/dp/B004ENAC4I/ref=wl_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=I3GQZ416MAP2H0&colid=RVSBV717YT9 Quote

The complete "Miles Juan Les Pins 1969" has been on lists of things Columbia's been working on for eons, going back to whatever that "upcoming releases" blog was that we all used to frequent (the hyper-detailed one that went on for PAGE after PAGE after PAGE). Boy, I sure do miss that thing. What was it called?? (And can anybody bring it up on the way-back-machine??) In any case, it's been talked about for, what?, going on 6 or 8 years now, maybe 10. I'm sure it would be out already, if the market for physical media hadn't gone in the crapper. Edited January 14, 2011 by Rooster_Ties Quote
J.A.W. Posted January 14, 2011 Report Posted January 14, 2011 Jazzmatazz, that was the site. Yep, Alan Lankin's site. Quote
Rooster_Ties Posted January 14, 2011 Report Posted January 14, 2011 Ah, yes, sweet Jazzmatazz. I morn, both for its loss, and the loss of a need for such a site. Quote

bertrand Posted January 14, 2011 Report Posted January 14, 2011 Yet they are putting out a 'BB live' set later. Wonder why this one was shelved? I have one set on Jazz Door. It indeed is great. Bertrand. Quote
jazzbo Posted January 14, 2011 Report Posted January 14, 2011 Well, the cool thing is part of what they ARE releasing is not out there officially or on bootleg cds (to my knowledge). The Juan-les-Pins material has been out in Japan and from Europe, two discs worth. . . . Perhaps Columbia feels most of those who would buy them. . . have them. Quote

It indeed is great. Bertrand. Yeah, really puzzling this has never come out. As a double-disc (both dates), they could easily entice everyone who already has the single-disc version to upgrade. The track-listing of the second date is interesting too, with very little overlap in tunes played on both dates, and one of the VERY few live versions of 'Nefertiti' ever recorded. Together, both dates form a compelling document of a VERY under-documented band. From Miles Ahead - 1969-July-26, unreleased (but circulates)... 1 Introduction 0:35 2 Directions (J. Zawinul) 6:17 -- Theme stated at 0:47. 3 Spanish Key (M. Davis) 10:36 -- From 7:40-8:17 Corea plays with the "Milestones" theme. 4 I Fall in Love Too Easily (S. Cahn-J. Styne) 2:54 5 Masqualero (W. Shorter) 8:28 6 Miles Runs the Voodoo Down (M. Davis) 8:45 7 No Blues (M. Davis) 13:33 8 Nefertiti (W. Shorter) 8:49 9 Sanctuary (W. Shorter-M. Davis) 3:32 -- Incomplete (1:34) on Stardust CDR, where there is a splice at 0:06, and a voiceover announcement 0:48-1:01. 10 The Theme (with applause) (M. Davis) From Miles Ahead - 1969-July-25, Sony SRCS 6843... 1 Directions (J. Zawinul) 6:00 -- Theme stated at 0:40. 2 Miles Runs the Voodoo Down (M. Davis) 9:16 3 Milestones (M. Davis) 13:45 4 Footprints (W. Shorter) 11:35 5 'Round Midnight (B. Hanighen-C. Williams-T. Monk) 8:58 6 It's About That Time (M. Davis) 9:30 7 Sanctuary (W. Shorter-M. Davis) 4:15 8 The Theme (M. Davis) 0:33 The Juan-les-Pins material has been out in Japan and from Europe, two discs worth. . . . Pretty sure the second date has NOT come out anywhere on any silver-disc (at least not that I'm aware of). The grey-market Euro-boot "Jazz Door" issue is the same date as the Japanese Sony. brownie Posted January 14, 2011 Report Posted January 14, 2011 (edited) This was the Japanese Sony CD release (complete with erroneous spelling of Festival and Juan les Pins)... Don't know of any other official release of the two concerts. May I add that I attended both concerts! Edited January 14, 2011 by brownie Quote

Okay, I guess I'm mistaken, I was confused I guess as I've had the music for years through a traders' circle I used to be a degree of an arc within. It really does need to be released officially, but the fate and state of Miles Davis material on cd this century has been perplexing and disheartening. I've become used to it. Quote
thedwork Posted January 14, 2011 Report Posted January 14, 2011 not sure if this is cool with everyone here, and you are probably all already aware, but there are two other downloadable recordings out there of concerts by what i assume is the same quintet. one is from 11/3/69 (Salle Pleyel, Paris), and the other is from 11/9/69 (Rotterdam, The Netherlands). for my ear, they're good recordings and great performances. i don't know the exact date of the concert this thread was started for, but maybe these two others are later? cheers... Don't know of any other official release of the two concerts. May I add that I attended both concerts! I picked this up yesterday and while I am very impressed with the performance, I wish the recording were as good. There seems to be a bit of distortion and in particular the horns buzz a bit - not terrible but not great either Edited January 18, 2011 by skeith Quote
