Those CaseLogic or other brand cd "notebooks" that hold cds - are these safe and effective storage mechanisms, or do cds need to be in some type of jewel box?

Some notebooks I have tried seem to have sort of a tight fit, and if notebook is full there may be undue pressure on the cds- is it harmful???

Are you talking about the type with "sleeves," kind of like photo albums? I always wonder if the discs are getting abraded somehow when you slide them in the sleeve things.

I have had some CDs in these for a few years, and so far, so good. Bear in mind that it's the label side that carries the music - I don't know whether you know this or not. That side is facing you and it is easy to hold the plastic away from it when removing or inserting the CD. I have not had scratches on the other sides, but you can get around minor ones with that plastic spectacle scratch filler.

I have never had any CD or CDr "die" on me, not even the silver CDrs that were said to be dubious. I think the question is going to be: how many decades do CDs last, especially CDrs. It's still too early to know.

The main thing, probably, is not to leave CDs in the car or on a window sill in hot weather. And avoid labradors!

Shrdlu,

thanks for your comments. I guess I really don't understand that the label side is the one that carries the music, so please explain.

Here's why I am confused: If you look at the way a cd player is set up, even a small portable one, the laser is on the opposite of the label side- that is it shines up from the bottom to the silver side. Also, all of the labelling stuff they sell like NEATOs etc, place a completely opaque label on the label side, so how is the laser reading through that?????

Thanks couw

then if i understand this correctly, the data is actually on the "underside" of the label side- that is sort of in the middle of the disc.

By the way, then by your explanation, putting NEATO label on the label side of the disc is great because it would prevent scratches.

Case Logic books seem to be perfectly safe for storing CDs. I have been using them since I bought my first CD player, in middle school! First CD you ask? Kid and Play. Can't think of the album title. I held onto it through most of high school. When I let that thing go, it flew at least 40 yards.

Seriously, Case Logics are great for traveling. I keep most of my CDRs in these books.

I've been using Case Logic binders since I started college three years ago, and have had no problems. The main beef I have with them is that they are so freakin' expensive! I need a third one at this point and can't bring myself to shell out $40 or more for a 200+ CD binder. Anyone know a source that carries them at reasonable prices?
