venusbloo Posted January 13, 2011 Report Posted January 13, 2011 Hello, I'm new to jazz although I do have a soft spot for Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and Natalie Cole whom I listen to quite often when not indulging in my love of southern rock. I was recently given a cd that had some new artists on it-unfortunatly it was a cdr and had no track listings etc, I only recognised 2 artists on the album-Katie Melua and Corinne Bailey Rae. I know they're not really jazz in the true sense of the word but have any of you got any reccomendations of artists like these to listen to at all? Also, have you got any reccomendations for a sort of-essential top 10 female vocalist albums-as well? Thanks in advance! Quote
danasgoodstuff Posted January 13, 2011 Report Posted January 13, 2011 Hello & welcome. I'm not a huge vocals fan but I do have a couple of suggestions: Dinah Washington, Dinah Jams puts her in the context of just another player at a jam; any of Cassandra Wilson's albums for Bluenote put her own spin on what it means to be a contemporary jazz vocalist. paul secor Posted January 13, 2011 Report Posted January 13, 2011 Meredith d'Ambrosio is a very fine jazz vocalist you might be interested in checking out. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted January 13, 2011 Report Posted January 13, 2011 You might like Diana Krall - possibly an unpopular recommendation around here but she has skills. Quote
ASNL77 Posted January 13, 2011 Report Posted January 13, 2011 (edited) Anita O'Day, Anita O'Day, Anita O'Day..... Edited January 13, 2011 by ASNL77 Quote
JSngry Posted January 13, 2011 Report Posted January 13, 2011 You might like Diana Krall - possibly an unpopular recommendation around here but she has skills. Right on both counts! I'm still not convinced about her phrasing of lyrics, at least not consistently, but that's as much about taste as it is skills, if not more. Quote
Victor Christensen Posted January 13, 2011 Report Posted January 13, 2011 Sarah Vaughan, Betty Carter, Anita O'Day, Carmen McRae and once more Sarah Vaughan, and maybe Nina Simone. Vic Quote
Van Basten II Posted January 14, 2011 Report Posted January 14, 2011 If you are looking for modern singers, Elisabeth Kontomanou is something special and worth listening. Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted January 14, 2011 Report Posted January 14, 2011 Shirley Horn would fit the examples you give - astonishing at slow tempos. And clearly the role model for Diana Krall. You'd probably enjoy Stacey Kent, too (I do!). Quote
venusbloo Posted January 15, 2011 Author Report Posted January 15, 2011 Thank you for the replies, I've got a bit of stuff there to being getting on with-many thanks! Quote
Van Basten II Posted January 15, 2011 Report Posted January 15, 2011 Nobody has mentionned yet Helen Merrill !!!! Quote

You may be right. Thought it doesn't jump out at me. I heard Krall before I listened consciously to Horn. When I did start enjoying Horn, my brain kept asking, 'But where have I heard this before?' Then it clicked. Quote

Dave James Posted January 20, 2011 Report Posted January 20, 2011 To me, when you're just starting to scratch the surface of jazz singing, it about building bridges. You mention listening to and enjoying Katie Malua and Corinne Bailey Rae, two artists with whom I'm somewhat familiar, but who you rightfully recognize aren't jazz singers. Nonetheless, you like what they're doing. So, instead of making what I would consider to be a quantum leap into the space occupied by an Anita O'Day or a Nina Simone or even a Shirley Horn, you need to listen to artists who are more transitional, i.e. those who have some jazz sensibilities but who you can still relate to given where you are right now. While I think Diana Krall is a workable suggestion, you might also want to consider checking out someone like Jacqui Naylor or Rickie Lee Jones. Welcome aboard. Just curious. How did you locate this collection of miscreants? Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted January 20, 2011 Report Posted January 20, 2011 Whatever. Shirley Horn is in my top 5. Now I have to think about numbers 3 and 4! Quote
JSngry Posted January 21, 2011 Report Posted January 21, 2011 This is a guy instead of a chick, and he looks like a total geek, but he does the whole walking-the-line-between-straight-ahead-and-Neo-Soul thing very nicely, I think. He sings and plays trombone, not something that you see too much these days. Quote
