Van Basten II Posted January 10, 2011 Report Posted January 10, 2011 His last one Yesterday You Said Tomorrow was on my top ten of 2010. Great musician but probably not as good as he thinks he is. If you dig a guy like Robert Glasper you may enjoy his musical horizons. Quote

Again, read something about him, but have not heard his music...... Quote
Niko Posted January 10, 2011 Report Posted January 10, 2011 if you're drifting anyway, why not try mike reed's people places and things, or the jamie saft trio album in john zorn's book of angels series instead? Quote

Justin V Posted January 11, 2011 Report Posted January 11, 2011 I like Scott's playing on Mike Clark's Blueprints of Jazz, Vol. 1, with Donald Harrison, Jed Levy, Patrice Rushen and Christian McBride. I also enjoyed Scott's Anthem, which was Scott's response to Hurricane Katrina. While it suffers from a certain degree of sameness from track to track, there is some powerful playing on it. Quote

Am afraid to say that's from him I got my name, he is one of my favourite footbal player of all time, too bad I barely saw him in action, Football coverage in the early 80s in Canada was rather spotty. sonnymax Posted January 12, 2011 Report Posted January 12, 2011 I'm disinclined to investigate a new artist who's touted as "the next big thing" or "the future of jazz." That's what I often read in people's comments on Scott's recordings. Anyone who disagrees or who finds fault with his music is often attacked by several fans. I found it amusing to see one Amazon customer who objected to Scott's music being labeled as "dispassionate," citing his admiration for Wynton Marsalis to bolster his argument. It all smacks of a popularity contest, rather than a serious consideration of the music. From what I've heard so far, Scott appears to be a young, but capable musician. I just haven't found anything in his music to make me want to join his legion of devoted followers. Quote

That's what I often read in people's comments on Scott's recordings........ ...i think so, too, but the point is, that it`s not the fault of the musician, that some critics call`em "the future of jazz", the new miles, chet, lee, lester, louis, dizzy, terence, till, bix, wynton, hannibal, butch, kenny, clark, bubber, fats, clifford, ack, manfred, freddie, woody, dusko, blue, booker, wallace, roy, tom, leo, tom, tom, mike, enrico, tomasz, paolo, markus, reiner, olu, baikida, paul, ian, palle, randy, chuck. ..... so i have to check them out by myself, and with your kind help, that i`m asking for from time to time... even if i will get it from van basten....;-) Quote

PHILLYQ Posted January 13, 2011 Report Posted January 13, 2011 I saw Scott play as a guest at a Soulive concert in Brooklyn a couple of years ago and I was very impressed, he played with plenty of fire. Sometime after that I picked up a live disc of his and was(to put it mildly) underwhelmed. I didn't check him out any more after that, but if he's at a live show I might go. Quote
sonnymax Posted January 13, 2011 Report Posted January 13, 2011 ...it`s not the fault of the musician, that some critics call`em "the future of jazz",... That might be true in some cases, but the main force behind these claims are the musician's record company, specifically it's marketing department. I don't know how much input Scott has in his promotional campaigns, but he's got to expect some backlash from serious jazz fans when he's being sold to the masses in such an exaggerated and superficial manner. As I said before, I have checked out his music, and I am unmoved and unimpressed. Quote

Bright Moments Posted February 26, 2011 Report Posted February 26, 2011 (edited) saw christian scott tonight with marcus miller (and a 23 year old sax player named alex han) doing a tribute to Miles. Wallace Roney sat in for 2 numbers. i must say christian was superb! the band(which included a keyboard player and drummer louis cato) was tight and having a great time. extremely enjoyable show!
