You all know which one I am talking about. It crops up on a Hill session and a Hubbard session and maybe others I can't remember. Does anyone know how come there was a harpsichord in Rudy's studio for those dates - tempting pianists who should know better to mess around on it?

Can anybody remember/name any other Rudy sessions with Harpsichord? I can't think of anything else on BN -- but maybe for another label, perhaps Impulse?

Somebody remind me what all labels Rudy recorded for (at least in the 60's).

I think he engineered Lalo Schifrin's "Marquis de Sade," but the harpsichord in that is very deliberate and part of the concept.

Was that recorded at Rudy's place, by chance?

One of the obvious questions is, did Rudy have a harpsichord on-site on a regular basis?? - at least during some period of time.

Yes, that 'de Sade' session was recorded at Van Gelders - April 1966. Just checked the Verve Elite CD.

Maybe he got one into his inventory just as that early psychadelia pop phase was ramping up, which tended to feature the harpsichord quite a bit.

Edit - just beat me to it !

The Hubbard is March 5 and the Hill is March 7, 1966. Seems that narrows it down a bit.

The Hubbard is the extra tracks on Blue Spirits and the Hill is Change.

Oh but wait - the Hubbard is a celeste - I misremembered. It is bizarre that the dates are so close then and both feature unusual instruments...

More sleuthing required, maybe?

RVG did some classical sessions early on, correct? Is it possible that he had a harpsichord the whole time?

If not, my (non-academic) theory is that one was brought in for the de Sade album, and musicians playing on other sessions were tempted to make noise on it while it was there.

Wait, isn't there at least one instance of an instrument being identified as being a celeste, and it clearly sounding like a harpsichord (or was it vice verse?)

And now that I'm thinking of it, wasn't there a McCoy BN session from later (1968 or after) that used either harpsichord or celeste (and maybe THAT'S the one that got them mixed up in the credits). Edit: Or maybe it was something with Chick?? I'm pretty sure it WASN'T a Herbie session.

The plot thickens!!

Were there any Rudy sessions (for BN or otherwise) that actually used celeste???

On Trident (1975) he played both celeste and harpsichord.

Just listened, and the Freddie 'March 5th' date with Herbie is CLEARLY a harpsichord, and NOT celeste. Celeste is more bell-like, though not with the sustain that handbells (or tubular bells) have. Not sure if a Celeste has a sustain pedal or not, be regardless, I'm hearing the distinct 'plucked string' sound of a harpsichord on that Freddie date.

SO, what ELSE might Rudy have been recording around that time with harpsichord on it?? What's the story on this instrument being there that particular week??

FWIW, the 2001 edition of the Cuscuna/Ruppli BN discography (page 191) says it's "celeste" on the Hill/Rivers date -- which has since been corrected to say harpsichord on the single-disc issue of that same date (now called "Change").

But, funny, the 1995 discography in the Hill complete 63-66 Mosaic says harpsichord.

In any case, it's clearly harpsichord, and somebody along the way has clearly gotten their instruments mixed up.

I didn't want to play the Hubbard again (!) but I should have checked. Not only the session info on the CD but also MC's notes call it a celeste - evidently MC did not know what a harpsichord sounded like!
