jlhoots Posted January 3, 2011 Report Posted January 3, 2011 I like Moran, Iyer, etc.. It's mostly about opinion anyway, so FOR ME if I like it it's good. Quote
JSngry Posted January 3, 2011 Report Posted January 3, 2011 It's only right and proper that these sorts of experiments - possibly developing into something organic - happen. What I'm waiting/hoping for is when it stops being an experiment and begins as something organic. Pretty sure it will happen...almost has to (and in Monday Michiru, it already has, although what if a forest grows and nobody's there to harvest the lumber, does that make it the sound of one hand falling?)...but I don't know if I'll live to see it or not....too much pre-programming in place right now, although the number of "new ears" seems to be growing with time...just not as fast as I would like. Oh well... Until then, the people who ignore both reflexive neophilia & compulsive jazz xenophopia (or at least put up a good fight) are the people I want most to hear these days, wherever they are, whoever they are. Hoppy T. Frog Posted January 9, 2011 Report Posted January 9, 2011 (edited) (Speaking as an admirer of Jason Moran and Vijay Iyer), I'd put great weight on Larry's opinions, since he is lucky enough to live in Chicago with its amazing homegrown scene and frequent visits by international heavyweights that he hears more great new music in a week than the rest of us in a year. Seriously, reading Downbeat today about the Umbrella Festival, Chicago jazz-wise sounds like Florence in the 15th Century. Edited January 9, 2011 by Hoppy T. Frog Quote
