clandy44 Posted December 29, 2003 Report Posted December 29, 2003 I know this has been covered before, but lately I have been buying some used cds with what seem to be the Mother of All Labels, which when finally peeled off leave a gross residue. Any suggested home remedies? Thanks. Quote
Morganized Posted December 29, 2003 Report Posted December 29, 2003 Sometimes regular rubbing alcohol will work. If not, lighter fluid on cotton cloth usually does the trick. May leave a slight residue. Remove the remainder with soap and water or the alcohol. Good luck Quote
Joe G Posted December 29, 2003 Report Posted December 29, 2003 the Mother of All Labels, which when finally peeled off leave a gross residue. Just encountered this on a Weather Report cd I bought just before Christmas. It's so bad that when I pick the case up from the top of a stack, the cd beneath it comes with. Quote
Chrome Posted December 29, 2003 Report Posted December 29, 2003 My home remedy is to always have some spare jewel cases around ... besides the "sticky residue" problem, a number of my used CD purchases come with cracked/damaged cases that I like to replace. Quote
Man with the Golden Arm Posted December 29, 2003 Report Posted December 29, 2003 Bestine! Great for printed matter as well. (pesky old LP stickers) Takes off greeazy finger prints and all other petro based gooeys. Quote
Claude Posted December 29, 2003 Report Posted December 29, 2003 I heat the jewel case with a hair dryer (take out the CD first and don't heat too long, for the case might change it's shape ), which loosens the glue and lets you peel off the price tag easily. For the rest of the glue traces, I use this traditional cleaning product from Luxembourg, unchanged for the past 40 years. The label doesn't say what it is composed of, it must be a secret formula Roboto.lu Quote
connoisseur series500 Posted December 29, 2003 Report Posted December 29, 2003 I use powder. Put some on the sticky area then rub it off with your thumb. May have to do this several times. The powder soaks up the sticky part. Works for me. Quote
jazzbo Posted December 29, 2003 Report Posted December 29, 2003 I use powder too! Oh no I don't. Forget I said that. Don't tell my parole officer. . . . Quote
Eric Posted December 29, 2003 Report Posted December 29, 2003 Try Un-do. It works great for both removing stickers and the residue. Eric Quote
kulu se mama Posted December 29, 2003 Report Posted December 29, 2003 wd40 not only works great on the residue it also removes any sufaces scratches. Quote
ralphie_boy Posted December 29, 2003 Report Posted December 29, 2003 Nail polish remover works too. Quote
Jim R Posted December 29, 2003 Report Posted December 29, 2003 Wow, there are more options that I thought. Here's what I use: Quote
mgraham333 Posted December 29, 2003 Report Posted December 29, 2003 Put a mark for me in the Goo Gone column....then use Goo Gone to erase the mark.... Quote
BERIGAN Posted December 30, 2003 Report Posted December 30, 2003 I have tried WD-40 and goo gone in the past, Goo works better, IMO, but the best I have found for cd cases in Prestone silicon spray, comes in a yellow can, doesn't stink quite the way WD-40 does either...some stick-um is so bad, nothing seems to work! I'll try the hairdryer trick...on a cd case that has NOT had any solvents on it! Quote
Eric Posted December 30, 2003 Report Posted December 30, 2003 Gotta tell you guys ... Un-do is the best. It is specifically designed for removing stickers/goo ... the bottle even has a built-in tool to help peel them off. The liquid you squirt on evaporates quickly and never damages the printed material. Nifty stuff! Eric Quote
mikeweil Posted December 30, 2003 Report Posted December 30, 2003 I use the hair-dryer or benzine, other solvents tend to change the surface of the plastci, and I never saw any of those fancy products like "un-do" over here ... well I'll be going on a trip to Luxembourg next year Quote
Brad Posted December 30, 2003 Report Posted December 30, 2003 To be honest, for what these jewel case costs, it's not worth the effort. I just get a new jewel case and send the old one to recycling. One of the worst offenders of the sticky jewel case has to be Blue Note. I consider myself lucky if I get one good one out of a batch of RVGs. Quote
clandy44 Posted December 31, 2003 Author Report Posted December 31, 2003 Thanks for all the suggestions. Bought Goo Gone and, by golly, it works! For those of you who have pets or kids, however, beware: it has a cloying citrus smell which is more appropriate (in a less concentrated form) to food products. Quote
