Was Santa good to you this Christmas, musically speaking?

I got three boxes:

Soft Machine - Original Album Classics

Johnny Cash - Complete Sun Masters

Sonny Rollins - Complete Prestige Recordings (still in the mail)

I got the latest Houston Person release on HighNote and a Cobra Records two-disc set I've had my eye on for about three years. I've heard so many Cobra recordings by the well-known like Otis Rush but I am very curious to hear the more obscure artists.

My mother has purchased Mosaic boxes for me for Christmas since the first year that Mosaic was in business. This year she got me the new Ellington box.

I also received the Willie Colon and Tito Rodriguez 2 CD compilations in the Fania "Man and His Music" reissue series.

Yeah, he does. I think Evolution is more his speed than Some Other Stuff, but he's a big fan of 50s/60s jazz.

That is incredibly cool - and probably incredibly unusual.

I didn't get any music for Christmas - unless I count the two Okka titles I bought for myself from Chuck the week before. My wife did give me two books that have a connection with music - the W. Eugene Smith Jazz Loft Project book and a book on the art works of Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Used my Amazon gift card, and this is what I ordered:

Roscoe Mitchell-Congliptious-Nessa

Lester Bowie-All The Numbers-Nessa

Sonny Rollins-Original Album Classics-RCA/Sony (The one that has all the RCA sides, sans the The Bridge, which I have as a Bluebird 1st edition)

HG, the Rollins box does indeed have The Bridge.

I got it last year for Christmas. Mine was cheap, and I wonder if a year later yours was even less expensive! I think mine cost $16.99 including shipping, but maybe it was $16.99 plus shipping.

Got an Amazon gift certificate from my mom (she's great) and I bought the out of print Mosaic HRS sessions and Mosaic Capitol Jazz Sessions!!! I got the Capitol set for $189 and the HRS for $150 (a little OOP premium...) I missed out on these when they were in print and have wanted them for a LONG time!!! Looking forward to listening to them when they come in.

My parents got me the Lionel Hampton Mosaic set, my brother-in-law got me the John Carter/Bobby Bradford Select and the Art Blakey Hard Bop Mosaic single, my sister got me the Dylan Witmark Demos, and I am spending some Christmas money on the Charlie Parker Savoy & Dial Studio Sessions box.

My wife grabbed Peggy Lee's Classics & Collectibles before I had a chance to open it, and a Scarlatti Oratorio.

And she gave me a Christmas CD by a local jazz singer - she had reserved tickets for one of her Christmas concerts as well but due to difficult road conditions we couldn't make the trip ....

Reading how many of you got Mosaic boxes set me to thinking ....

Maybe I gotta show my wife how to use her credit card on the web, after all.

The Revenant Albert Ayler box

and, at the last minute, the fabulous Bear Family calypso box - West Indian Rhythm - which I've had my eye on for ages and was halved in price at Jumbo Records in Leeds! Thanks Jumbo.

Makes me wonder if there are any father-son combinations on this jazz board or others. It would be funny if there were and somehow the parties didn't know it.

This was a somewhat music-light Christmas season for me. I played Santa to myself with the Chick Corea and Sonny Rollins box sets advertised in the box bargains thread. My eldest daughter took credit for wrapping up and reimbursing me for the Corea set. Listening to it now. :tup

Uh oh, I hope not. unsure.gif They had two Rollins boxes at Amazon, which had different pics on the box. They both had the same albums except one box had What's New and the other one had the Bridge. I paid $19.99 for it plus tax.

You're in for a treat!
