brownie Posted December 21, 2010 Report Posted December 21, 2010 French photographer Jean-Pierre Leloir who for the past six decades recorded images of jazz musicians on the Paris scene died Monday evening at his Paris home. The news was announced by his daughter. Some of his most famous photos can be seen on his site. A book of his jazz photos 'Portraits Jazz' was published two months ago: Quote
king ubu Posted December 21, 2010 Report Posted December 21, 2010 Sad news - don't have any books of his, but what I've seen was always mighty good! r.i.p. Quote
sidewinder Posted December 22, 2010 Report Posted December 22, 2010 Sorry to hear this. Truly one of the great photographers of jazz. Quote
brownie Posted December 22, 2010 Author Report Posted December 22, 2010 A pipe-smoking Jean-Pierre Leloir (without his cameras) greets Miles Davis (with camera) and his then wife Frances Taylor at the Paris Saint-Lazare railway station in July 1963. http://www.ina.fr/video/CAF90031375/arrivee-a-paris-de-miles-davis.fr.html Quote
Big Beat Steve Posted December 22, 2010 Report Posted December 22, 2010 Yes, this is sad. RIP. Will try to get his "Portrait Jazz" book ASAP. His pictures are all over the place anyway, even if you do not own a book credited specifically to him alone you are likely to have come across them quite often. For example, the illustrations in my 8mid-80s) copy of the "Nouvelle Encyclopédie du Blues" by Gerard Herzhaft are by J.P. Leloir throughout. A bit skewed because this largely rules out really old "period" photographs (most of Leloir's pictures seem to be from the late 60s and 70s) but the pictures as such are fine. Quote
brownie Posted December 22, 2010 Author Report Posted December 22, 2010 Will try to get his "Portrait Jazz" book ASAP. I have very mixed feelings about the book. I do not think it is the right tribute to Leloir's talent. It is badly edited. Some of Leloir's best photos are not there. I also was hoping to see some of his unpublished material. That's not there. A missed opportunity Quote
Big Beat Steve Posted December 22, 2010 Report Posted December 22, 2010 Thanks very much for the words of caution, Brownie! No unseen purchase through Amazon.fr, then. Will wait for may next trip to Strasbourg to have a look at it (hopefully) at the FNAC. Quote

This one: http://www.ina.fr/video/I00003429/jacques-brel-les-seances-photos.fr.html Brel speaks about photographers in general and Jean-Pierre Leloir in particular. All in french. Leloir is seen taking potos of Brel on stage at the Paris Olympia theater in 1964. Quote

Dear Ellie I wanted to say hello to you. You will not remember me as we have never met. I'm related to your father Jerry and had met your mother on many occasions in "North Greek". I'm sad to hear the news of your grandfathers passing. He was an amazing photographer and his subject matter is dear to my heart "Jazz". I was reminded of him recently when viewing a documentary on Miles Davis. Jean Pierre was featured prominently. It was wonderful to see him. I met him many years ago when he was in New York City. I shall always remember him! Please give my best to Jerry and Rosine. I do realize that they are no longer together! Very Best Regards, Ken Schuyler (ken.schuyler@comcast.net) Quote
