ghost of miles Posted December 20, 2010 Report Posted December 20, 2010 (edited) This past week's Night Lights show, The David Baker Songbook is now archived for online listening. It includes interviews with jazz educator/composer David Baker and bandleader Brent Wallarab (whose orchestra recorded an entire CD of Baker's music), as well as interpretations of Baker's music by George Russell, Philly Joe and Elvin Jones, the Buselli-Wallarab Jazz Orchestra, Jack Wilson, and Baker himself. Coming up later this week: "A Cool Christmas." Edited March 26, 2016 by ghost of miles Quote
ghost of miles Posted December 21, 2016 Author Report Posted December 21, 2016 Reposting this today in memory of David Baker on what would have been his 85th birthday. A concert of his music will be performed next month at the IU Musical Arts Center. The David Baker Songbook Quote
Lazaro Vega Posted December 23, 2016 Report Posted December 23, 2016 Jazz From Blue Lake featured the Busselli-Wallarab disc, and the George Russell records and a few selections from the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra in celebration and memorial. Oh, so THAT's where the Basically Baker album Volume 1 is, on Gunther Schuller's label! Quote

Oh, so THAT's where the Basically Baker album Volume 1 is, on Gunther Schuller's label! Lazaro, yes, and infamously out of print for many years. Indianapolis-based Owl Studios did a very small repressing of it several years ago, and now it's coming out again on trombonist Wayne Wallace's Patois Records label. Physical copies should be going out next month or February. Quote
Lazaro Vega Posted January 4, 2017 Report Posted January 4, 2017 Beautiful: thanks for the update. We have several Owl Studio things here, but missed that one.... Quote
CJ Shearn Posted January 22, 2017 Report Posted January 22, 2017 I will be posting a podcast real soon for New York Jazz Workshop I did with Brent Wallarab back in May that got lost in the shuffle when my mom died. Mr. Wallarab is all class and was a pleasure to talk to. Quote
ghost of miles Posted January 23, 2017 Author Report Posted January 23, 2017 Brent is indeed a class act! I just moderated a panel discussion yesterday in which he and a number of other musicians and scholars talked about David's life and legacy. We had a fantastic concert of David's music in the evening as well. Full disclosure: I wrote the liner notes for the new CD Basically Baker 2, as well as the newly-reissued version of Basically Baker 1. Quote
