'The Sidewinder': how many cover versions?

omg. right now i have on Ray Charles Orchestra version, i also heard (and passed up...) a woody herman version, with a white mail vocal chorus vocalizing "the SIDE-wind-ER"...youd have to be there. the ray version was 'ok'......

there is many more i know...

strongly prefer the b-side to the ray single, 'booty butt'

Liked the Art Farmer version from the Columbia album 'Art Farmer Plays the Great Jazz Hits'!

There was also an album by the Manhattan Jazz Quintet but I never listened to it!

There's a version on Joe Sample's Did You Feel That?

For me this is a one-off classic of modern funky soul jazz, with some great cooking grooves and fellow Crusaders on board. Just listening to it now, I'm afraid to say Sidewinder is prolly the weakest cut.

If you count all the "originals" that derive from it or sample it, the number of covers gets very big.

Woody Herman did a version of it on 'Jazz Hoot' (CBS). I heard this years before I ever heard the Lee Morgan version.

Hilton Ruiz also recorded the tune on 'Strut' (RCA/Novus). With Sam Rivers !

the linkage pretty quickly, but I think thaey missed the James Brown band's versions and Bobbi Humphrey's, with Lee doing the noblese oblige thing. I've often thought you could do a nice compilation of Bluenote does Bluenote with all the remakes on the label and with JB and Ray as ringers.

I think that's Blue Mitchell soloing on the Ray Charles Big Band version of The Sidewinder (Bobby Bryant is the other trumpeter on the recording session)......
