Ellington Centennial Edition on eBay, new and Buy It Now at $125 with $14 shipping. That's as cheap as I've seen it.

I managed to grab this after seeing your post. It arrived today packaged well and in really nice condition. Thank you for the heads up!

Found another one for $175, been wanting this one since it was released. Have "copies" of discs and book alike, but something like this, I want an original, just because. If there's a little wear, oh well.

Here's one for $199.99: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Duke-Ellington-The-Centennial-Edition-Complete-RCA-Victor-Recordings/153772761855?epid=3313123&hash=item23cd9222ff:g:IuIAAOSwFZNeAUQK

It may well be that prices will continue to drop as the perceived market for anything CD-related continues to drop, but I'll take mine now, thank you.

I don't think they could fill an lp I would buy.

Depends on the period you’re talking about. They were great and trailblazers between 1962-65 until Alan Price left.  Many memorable songs, classics. After that, not as good in my opinion. I’ve heard Before We Were So Rudely Interrupted, recorded in 1977 with Alan Price, is very good, although I’ve yet to sample it.

Brad, I love "Before We Were So Rudely Interrupted."

All of the pre-1966 Alan Price masters are on "The Complete Animals."

Thanks GA. I recently saw the first one in a vinyl store and think I may pick that one up.  As to the Complete Animals I may pick it up although it dates back to 1990. There was a box set issued in 2013 called the Mickie Most Years and More but it’s OOP and the one copy I’ve seen on Amazon is $249; no Discogs sellers have it.

I'm actually not a fan of "...Rudely Interrupted", but am in the minority there.  By all means, pick up The Complete Animals.  Dirt cheap, and the only reasonable place to get all of that material.  There is a middle Animals period around 1966ish which is not well represented on CD.  'Animalism'/'Animalisms' and related tracks.

Thanks. Yes, it’s dirt cheap. This group doesn’t seem well appreciated to me.

Do you have any Blues Incorporated? Thoughts?

Complicated, forerunners who did not progress.  This is the undisputed early masterpiece and only must-have, also available very cheaply.  The group I found much more convincing for this sort of thing was the Graham Bond Organisation, who had Dick Heckstall-Smith (also on this Blues Inc. album), Jack Bruce, and Ginger Baker.  Zoot Money also did some interesting work in this vein, as did Georgie Fame, but the Bond group is the one I favor, along with John Mayall's groups from that period, of course.  And from Bond and Mayall's personnel, you shortly afterward got Cream, Fleetwood Mac, and the magnificent Colosseum.

Thanks. I listened to a couple of cuts yesterday and while I recognize their influence, they seemed to be lacking feeling. Allmusic calls them a little stiff. Maybe that’s the right word. I haven’t heard much Graham Bond so may check them out.

At this point, their importance is much more historical than musical, and they were quickly obsolete.  As you well know, music progressed at a staggering pace in the 60's.

Four Manfred Mann BBC box sets are being released today.  Each is $16.98.  I will pick up the Chapter III set for sure.

It was fifty years ago today that I met Manfred, and that evening attended Chapter III's concert.  He let me plug my tape recorder into his system!

So today I have opened up this Chapter III set, and listened to the first disc.  It is much better than I expected.  More swing, less heavy than the studio recordings.

What has kept me away is the film soundtrack music on the second disc.  Please report back on that after you give it a listen!
