Far superior sound and packaging, and three more albums, all for $10. That being said, all of the good stuff is on the first five albums to my ears. Superior early fusion, before it became so formulaic (as it does on the later albums in this box - the Cobham/Duke is expertly played goofy garbage). Quote
GA Russell Posted March 4, 2016 Author Report Posted March 4, 2016 Thanks felser! Maybe I'll get it for Easter. Quote

Agreed. My feeling about "contemporary jazz" in general... the smooth jazz radio stations were its death knell. I have read that they encouraged the formulaic approach, but who knows. Quote

I received mine in the mail yesterday and the seller even included a brand new "bonus" cassette tape of some R&B material. A nice little surprise! It looks like a nice little set with what looks to be an informative booklet. I have not done a track by track comparison, but I think this is a compact repackaging of this out-of-print boxed set of King material that used to come in the longbox format. Quote

It is indeed the same set, repackaged in a "fatboy" 4-disc jewel case; I'm guessing the booklet is likewise a smaller version of the one in the longbox. The longbox set is the one I remembered as being considerably more expensive. When I realized the newer one was a different version, I initially thought it was one of those overseas PD releases, but a quick trip to Google to research the label it was issued on (Gusto Records) revealed that they're a Nashville-based outfit that owns the King catalog (as well as the catalogs of Starday, Musicor, Federal, and several other labels). The Amazon seller appears to be the label itself, as the note that was included with my copy was on King letterhead and included a kingrecords.com contact address. I also got a complimentary cassette - Groove Power: The Best of 80s R&B. Edited March 5, 2016 by Dave Garrett Quote
GA Russell Posted March 5, 2016 Author Report Posted March 5, 2016 25 years ago I picked up a Gusto cassette of Charles Brown's great King Christmas album. Quote

Start with 'Stand Up' and 'Benefit', then "Aqualung' and 'Thick As A Brick' and 'Living in the Past', then 'This Was', then some of their later 70's albums found on this set. Quote

Agreed, but you can't get all of those for $10. I don't have any of those myself. I recently upgraded all my earlier CDs (through Passion Play) to the multiple disk remastered sets, although I read recently that there will be NEW re-re-master of Aqualung soon. Quote

crisp Posted March 29, 2016 Report Posted March 29, 2016 I saw them in concert once and it was fun. Would I want any of their records? No. They aren't original enough to be more than a live proposition for me. Quote
GA Russell Posted March 29, 2016 Author Report Posted March 29, 2016 Thanks, crisp. Your answer doesn't surprise me. Still, twenty bucks for four albums is appealling. Quote

king ubu Posted May 8, 2016 Report Posted May 8, 2016 That's a pretty nice one! Guess it's a good pick for those (i.e. me) who don't feel the need for two dozen Capitol albums of hers. Quote
mikeweil Posted May 8, 2016 Report Posted May 8, 2016 Got a copy after a previous recommendation - good selection in excellent sound. Quote
