Billy Cobham - The Atlantic Years (8 CDs) - $23.09 + $3.99

http://www.amazon.com/The-Atlantic-Box-Set-1973-1978/dp/B012HPDCSW

Does anyone have an opinion of this music?  How about the OAS for $13.82 + $3.99?

Go with the Atlantic Years set.  Far superior sound and packaging, and three more albums, all for $10.  That being said, all of the good stuff is on the first five albums to my ears.  Superior early fusion, before it became so formulaic (as it does on the later albums in this box - the Cobham/Duke is expertly played goofy garbage).

Agreed. My feeling about "contemporary jazz" in general... the smooth jazz radio stations were its death knell. I have read that they encouraged the formulaic approach, but who knows.

:tup Had that one on my list for quite a while, but last time I checked it was significantly more than that.

I received mine in the mail yesterday and the seller even included a brand new "bonus" cassette tape of some R&B material.  A nice little surprise!  It looks like a nice little set with what looks to be an informative booklet.  I have not done a track by track comparison, but I think this is a compact repackaging of this out-of-print boxed set of King material that used to come in the longbox format.

It is indeed the same set, repackaged in a "fatboy" 4-disc jewel case; I'm guessing the booklet is likewise a smaller version of the one in the longbox. The longbox set is the one I remembered as being considerably more expensive. When I realized the newer one was a different version, I initially thought it was one of those overseas PD releases, but a quick trip to Google to research the label it was issued on (Gusto Records) revealed that they're a Nashville-based outfit that owns the King catalog (as well as the catalogs of Starday, Musicor, Federal, and several other labels). The Amazon seller appears to be the label itself, as the note that was included with my copy was on King letterhead and included a kingrecords.com contact address.

I also got a complimentary cassette - Groove Power: The Best of 80s R&B:cool:

Jethro Tull OAS...$9.99 Prime.

I own zero Tull so for this price I can't go wrong.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KM478JA?keywords=jethro%20tull&qid=1458775116&ref_=sr_1_4&sr=8-4

It's a good deal and some pretty decent albums, but not where I would recommend starting with Tull.  Start with 'Stand Up' and 'Benefit', then "Aqualung' and 'Thick As A Brick' and 'Living in the Past', then 'This Was', then some of their later 70's albums found on this set.

Agreed, but you can't get all of those for $10. I don't have any of those myself. I recently upgraded all my earlier CDs (through Passion Play) to the multiple disk remastered sets, although I read recently that there will be NEW re-re-master of Aqualung soon.
