jazzbo Posted November 8, 2015 Report Posted November 8, 2015 I received the Ellington, Blakey and Monk boxes from amazon.co.uk (actually shipped from amazon.de) this week. The older masterings are used on those discs that were released in the 'nineties but they sound somewhat improved to my ears. Nice box sets. Quote

Where is the live track from Mexico with Bubeck? Will we ever see a proper reissue of these? Probably not. That's why I don't like these boxes. Mike, those have been added to one of the Newport discs in this set. 24 minutes ago, Kyo said: Thanks, that looks quite interesting - only have the first CD included in the set. StarThrower Posted November 23, 2015 Report Posted November 23, 2015 Ten percent off at importcds until Monday at 5 PM CST. Just ordered the Ran Blake, and Kenny Wheeler box sets at really good prices. Quote
Edward Posted November 29, 2015 Report Posted November 29, 2015 www.Grooves-Inc.com is offering a 20% discount with coupon code HZG3969 that is good until December 3, 2015. Shipping is free, and there is no state sales tax (at least for me in California). I purchased the recently released 4-CD boxed set, "The Complete Matrix Tapes", by the Velvet Underground for $33.91. There are good base prices (i.e., before the application of any discounts) on several recent releases such as the three-CD set of "A Love Supreme" (i.e., The Complete Masters - Super Deluxe) ($24.02) and "Frank Sinatra, A Voice on the Air - 1935 - 1955" ($45.55) - I'm sure that there must be other sets that would be of interest. mikeweil Posted November 30, 2015 Report Posted November 30, 2015 (edited) The track "Blues" (often mistitled C-Jam Blues) with Brubeck from a Mexican tour was in Brubeck's Summit Sessions album; Thelonious Monk Quartet And Dave Brubeck : Charlie Rouse (ts) Thelonious Monk (p) Dave Brubeck (p-1) added, Larry Gales (b) Ben Riley (d) Live "Auditoria de la Reforma", Puebla, Mexico, May 12, 1967 Green chimneys (unissued) Don't blame me (tm p-solo) Columbia Legacy C3K64887 [CD] Evidence (unissued) Blues (cr out,1) Columbia C30522, CBS (Eu)S64377, Columbia Legacy 88697-99580-2 [CD] Note: Columbia C30522, CBS (Eu)S64377, both titled "Dave Brubeck : Summit sessions". "Blues" mistitled as "C-jam blues" on most issues. Monk's solo on "Don't Blame Me" from the same concert was first issued on the 3-CD box Orrin Keepnews had compiled for Columbia, "The Columbia Years '62-'6". jazzbo Posted November 30, 2015 Report Posted November 30, 2015 Additional tracks on the second cd of the Newport set in this box that you haven't mentioned are listed as from the soundtrack. Quote
mikeweil Posted November 30, 2015 Report Posted November 30, 2015 Thanks - as I have the soundtrack and the DVD, too, besides all previous CD reissues, downloading single tracks from Qobuz seems to be the option for me. Still it's too bad they didn't go for completing those concert recordings - or did they? Anything previously unissued? Quote
jazzbo Posted November 30, 2015 Report Posted November 30, 2015 Nothing previously unissued in this set. I think that this set includes all the live Monk released so far. I have not idea what really might remain of these recordings. . . its possible not much was recorded at Brandeis for example. This is likely all we will get for now. Quote

mandrill Posted December 11, 2015 Report Posted December 11, 2015 So, how many volumes of "Creed Taylor Collection" will there be? And after it's all done, are you sure they won't be issued again combined in one 150 or some CDs box, like they do with classical boxes nowadays. "Orrin Keepnews Collection", "RVG collection", "Creed Taylor Collection", "Monk Collection", "Ellington Collection"- over and over and over again. I only wish someone would lavish such attention on the fact that Plugged Nickel is still out of print. Or Braxton's Willisau set. Or LaMonte Young's Well Tuned Piano. Or John Carter's Roots & Folklore series, etc, etc. Quote
