king ubu Posted August 15, 2014 Report Posted August 15, 2014 The latest Jacques Brel intégrale, Suivre l'étoile, 21 CDs, for €50 at Amazon France. F extremely tempting ... but then I have the small "Intégrale des album originaux" .. hm ... Same here. However, I've had the box in my hands and it looks terrific (10-inch square, IIRC). And although it's probably not the best way to judge this, I've listened to some mp3 and the sound is better to my ears. Of course there are complaints about this not being really complete and all that, but still... F definitely looks like a wonderful box ... actually I've noticed it (at full price) some days ago and was tempted, so this is a no-brainer, really (and I guess I know a friend who'd be very happy to get the other one)thanks for the alert! bogdan101 Posted August 16, 2014 Report Posted August 16, 2014 I was tempted as well by the new Brel box, even if I have an "Integrale" from the late 90's. Luckily this new box is on Spotify so I could compare the sound with the old one I have; the new one sounds worse than the old one, most importantly on Brel's voice, which sounds colder and thinner. Other things are different as well, there is less reverb now and a leaner overall sound. Of course there is additional material on the new box, which may alone be worth 50 euro, but in the end I'm happy with my older set. Quote
GA Russell Posted August 16, 2014 Author Report Posted August 16, 2014 Per the Manfred Mann, it's frustrating. The EMI stuff has been available in many configurations throughout the CD era (I own the 4CD "Down The Road A Piece" set, which is as perfect as these things get from what I can tell), yet as far as I know, the Fontana stuff that followed is very difficut to find. I have a spotty 20 track "Best of" from that era, but nothing more comprehensive is available that I know of. Am I missing anything? felser, to my knowledge, there has never been a box set of Manfred Mann Chapter Two's complete Fontana recordings, but I believe that every song has been issued on CD. You will note that this CD of What a Mann includes songs which did not make their LP's, including I Wanna Be Rich, Let It Be Me, Miss JD, All I Wanna Do, Last Train to Clarksville, Sunshine Superman and My Name is Jack. Here is another collection. In early 1969, Fox on the Run was the #1 song in Washington, DC, and to my knowledge not played on the radio anywhere else in America! As you probably know, it was later a country hit. (It may interest you to learn that A "B" Side was recorded with lyrics on Manfred's next album, Chapter Three, with the title Travelling Lady.) I am not aware of any other tracks they recorded for Fontana. Hope this helps! Quote

I know the first one, a 10-CD set from 1988, and the latest one should sound better (and has more music). I'm no audiophile, and especially with Brel I admit I don't pay too much attention to the sound. I hope no one is too disappointed with this, or that any problems maybe overcome with a bit of EQ-ing. But the idea of spending $65 for these, to add maybe 30 cuts to what I have, doesn't seem like a good idea given economic realities. But I will track the albums on the usual sites, thanks again! Van Basten II Posted August 16, 2014 Report Posted August 16, 2014 Although the title complete is so ridiculous it's laughable, it remains a good deal to get a comprehensive set of music from Morricone, on the negative side little added value besides the mucic but 60 $ for 15 CDS ain't bad. http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Edition-Ennio-Morricone/dp/B001KXHSCO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1408217449&sr=8-1&keywords=morricone+complete Quote

F I have the older 10-cd set in a repackaging from the 90's, and for me that sounds better than the latest box, which almost sounds like a remix, with vocals pushed back and instruments brought forward and everything brightened up. Btw, this is all apparent listening though cheap computer speakers. Edited August 16, 2014 by bogdan101 Quote
GA Russell Posted August 17, 2014 Author Report Posted August 17, 2014 Manfred Mann Chapter 3 would make a very nice double CD ! +1,000! Bob, many years ago (probably 1995) I read the book Mannerisms: the Five Phases of Manfred Mann by Greg Russo. http://www.amazon.com/Mannerisms-Five-Phases-Manfred-Mann/dp/0964815710/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1408249078&sr=1-2&keywords=the+five+faces+of+manfred+mann In it, the author says that Chapter III recorded about half enough for a third album, which he had heard. I would love for Universal to release a box set of the two released albums, this half-an-album, and alternate takes, a few of which have been released as bonus tracks on later CD releases of the two issued albums. felser Posted August 17, 2014 Report Posted August 17, 2014 I have the Chapter III stuff, really like it a lot despite the weak vocals. Quote
king ubu Posted August 22, 2014 Report Posted August 22, 2014 Got my Brel box early in the morning ... the mail man must have thought I was an insomniac - was working until 4 a.m. (for a paper I had to hand in at 9 a.m.) and he rang at 7:30 or so, I wasn't dressed yet and was of course not quite awake either ... but anyway, the box looks gorgeous indeed! Silly way to store the CDs (on top, in "slots" in the thick cardboard, similar to the Hip-O-Select 7-inch-boxes, but here, it's two discs per page), so the box is bloated, but flipping through the booklet it seems it's indeed a nice presentation! Lots of photos and all the relevant info at the back, no liner notes proper, rather a montage of many Brel quotes taken from a variety of interviews. And with the booklet, there's also an enveloppe with some replicas of memorabilia: Brel's pilot license etc. I have no. 09845 - how many would there be? 10 or 20 thousand? Quote
