medjuck Posted November 1, 2010 Report Posted November 1, 2010 Anyone know if the Ellington contains anything not available elsewhere? Quote
ejp626 Posted November 1, 2010 Report Posted November 1, 2010 It looks like the Ellington (Clinkscales) more or less covers the same territory as Masters of Jazz 1-5 (without alternative tracks) and about 1/3 of MoJ vol. 6. I may go ahead and get it, since I don't have MoJ or Classics, and they are sure hard to track down now. It doesn't look to me that there is anything new. Quote
jostber Posted November 1, 2010 Report Posted November 1, 2010 Just ordered the Nuggets Gospel box. Seems like great value. Thanks for the tip. Quote

Chuck Nessa Posted November 1, 2010 Report Posted November 1, 2010 (edited) Not enough to make it worthwhile for me. You will get about 1 disc worth of new material, including a couple of sideman gigs backing singers. I suggest printing out the contents and checking off the titles you have. That's what I did. Edited November 1, 2010 by Chuck Nessa Quote
medjuck Posted November 1, 2010 Report Posted November 1, 2010 Thanks. That's one thing I like about the web-- we don't have to duplicate each other's research. Next time something like this comes up, let me know and I'll see if I can do it for you. Quote
mjzee Posted November 2, 2010 Report Posted November 2, 2010 Oh man, this is gonna hurt...but thanks! I've been looking at a lot of these boxes for awhile; will probably spring for Gennett Jazz, Breaking Out of New Orleans, Paramount Jazz, and Cantors Klezmorim & Crooners. There are more boxes on sale than on the originally posted link; you just gotta poke around... I have a few of these boxes already, and can recommend the Louis Armstrong, the first Django, Mississippi Blues, the first Coleman Hawkins, and Paramount (Blues) Masters. Quote
MomsMobley Posted November 2, 2010 Report Posted November 2, 2010 Same here. However, anyone who doesn't already know at least half of this-- Oistrakh EMI should hop on; it's greater than all Miles Davis reissues, ever, inc. "Plugged Nickel" (which was nice but this is eternal). Bernstein Sony Mahler & complete Horowitz are also marked down significantly; I highly recommend the latter for those who can afford it; otherwise start with the Scarlatti and go from there. Not enough to make it worthwhile for me. You will get about 1 disc worth of new material, including a couple of sideman gigs backing singers. I suggest printing out the contents and checking off the titles you have. That's what I did. Quote

MomsMobley Posted November 2, 2010 Report Posted November 2, 2010 That is a very good deal for people who don't have much already tho' it leaves the choral & concertante works hanging. Sony is pretty good about mastering their classical so hopefully they'll use best available transfers. One of the minor secrets of vintage classical is that Masterworks series has a # of titles actually RE-MIXED and mastered for first time on cd at budget price: Robert Craft Schoenberg transcriptions; Ormandy Mahler 10; some Szell Mozart; even a Perahia Bartok recital that's actually quite excellent. SIDENOTE: The rank idiocy of major labels even when do they do excellent things a strong core would like to buy and promote out of love of music? The forthcoming complete Heifetz Original Jacket set, which I can find ZERO info on except at HMV.Co.Jp There was similar lag time on the Horowitz-- even question whether it would be avail domestic-- but how hard can this be? They obviously don't give a shit at some level, as there are numerous listings on Amazon which don't list a sets contents-- which is Sony/BMG's fault, not Amazon, they obviously want more info for buyers, not less. David Posted November 2, 2010 Report Posted November 2, 2010 Not to derail the aside, but does anyone have any opinions of the Charlie Christian and the Coleman Hawkins boxes? I have little of Hawkins from the 29-39 period (only a few tracks on the RCA Centennial and a Japanese BMG Victor release entitled "Body and Soul"), and no 'dedicated' Charlie Christian. I'm not a stickler for sound -- as long as its better than the 1943-44 Prestige Duke Ellington Carnegie Hall Concerts, I'm fine. Also, the Waller sets look fantastic as well. Are there any recommendations for a specific volume or volumes for someone who only has the RCA Centennial collection? Thanks! Quote
mikelz777 Posted November 2, 2010 Report Posted November 2, 2010 (edited) I'd recommend Coleman Hawkins' 4-Cd "Bebop Years" put out by Proper if you don't already have his stuff from that era. Right now you can get it new for less than $14.00. Edited November 2, 2010 by mikelz777 Quote
cliffpeterson Posted November 2, 2010 Report Posted November 2, 2010 I have not been able to figure out if the more recent Reinhardt box set, The Postwar Recordings 1944-1953, has any overlap with previous sets JSP issued. does anybody know? Quote
lipi Posted November 2, 2010 Report Posted November 2, 2010 I have not been able to figure out if the more recent Reinhardt box set, The Postwar Recordings 1944-1953, has any overlap with previous sets JSP issued. does anybody know? Yes, it overlaps with both the "London and Paris" and "Rome" sets. It has some stuff (after 1950) that's not on either of those, though. I believe most of it is overlap, but I don't have it handy with me right now to check. And thanks for the heads-up, medjuck! Quote
lipi Posted November 2, 2010 Report Posted November 2, 2010 (edited) Not to derail the aside, but does anyone have any opinions of the Charlie Christian and the Coleman Hawkins boxes? I really enjoy the Christian. The same tunes appear many times, the solos are different, but there's still a lot of "hey-that-sounds-similar" going on. Anyway: it's a great complement to the Genius of the Electric Guitar box with the studio sides. If I had to pick between the two, I'd go for the studio sides, though. Also, the Waller sets look fantastic as well. Are there any recommendations for a specific volume or volumes for someone who only has the RCA Centennial collection? I only have volumes 1 and 4 right now, and I enjoy both. The first has some stuff not under Waller's name (backing singers like Alberta Hunter). The fourth has stuff all under his name. If you don't feel like going complete, I think the 4-disc Proper box ("Handful of Keys") is a very good best-of sort of collection. If you do think you want to go complete, I'd probably start somewhere later in the series, unless you have a strong interest in the singers he's backing earlier on. Anyone want to post their embarrassingly long list of purchases at this sale? Mine, including lots of non-Jazz: Fats Waller volumes 2, 3, 5, 6 (I had the other two already) Gennett Jazz Bing Crosby: Vintage Years Bessie Smith volumes 1 and 2 Memphis Minnie volumes 1 and 2 (Country Blues, Delta Blues) Blind Boy Fuller: 1935-1938 Jook Joint Blues: That's What They Want Chicago Is Just That Way: 1938-1954 Spreading the Word: Early Gospel Recordings Nuggets of Golden Age of Gospel: 1945-1958 Clarence Gatemouth Brown: Boogie Uproar: Texas Blues & R&B: 1947-1954 Roy Brown & New Orleans R&B Classic Doo Wop Phew! ejp626 Posted November 2, 2010 Report Posted November 2, 2010 e Coleman Hawkins boxes? Anyone want to post their embarrassingly long list of purchases at this sale? Mine, including lots of non-Jazz: Fats Waller volumes 2, 3, 5, 6 (I had the other two already) I actually had all the Waller sets (I got them at some discount but not these prices). The only one I got was the Ellington Clinkscales. I am, however, fairly likely to get the Bernstein Symphonies box on pre-order. (There's enough of an overlap with his Mahler Symphonies box that I will probably part with that -- not that big into the songs.) Quote
miles65 Posted November 2, 2010 Report Posted November 2, 2010 My favorite Fats Waller boxes are the first two. Box 2 has the Ted Lewis session. Your life is not complete until you heard "Egyptian Ella". There's plenty to enjoy on the other boxes as well. Box 3 starts with "African Ripples" and "Clothes Line Ballet". To name just 2 tracks I like very much. Quote
jazzbo Posted November 2, 2010 Report Posted November 2, 2010 Almost any of the Waller boxes is a great choice, the music is so uniformly great. I'll echo Stompy and say the second is a great one. . . . My guess is the JSP box is likely a rip of the Affinty box set of Hawkins material. The sound on that was okay, so I suspect that this box set will have good sound. Maybe these were taken from Classics discs, again, that's a sign of good sound. Quote
David Posted November 3, 2010 Report Posted November 3, 2010 Thanks for all the replies thus far. It looks like at least one or two of the Waller sets are the essential pickups for me. I'm likely on the 'wait until later' side of the fence for the Christian or the Hawkins stuff, at least for now. Quote
romualdo Posted November 3, 2010 Report Posted November 3, 2010 (edited) I'd recommend the Hawkins box - has been remastered by Ted Kendall I also have the 10CD hawkins Membran box which is very likely a rip from the Classics CD's - the sound is superior in the JSP set (when comparing overlapping tracks from both sets) The Shorty Rogers set is very comprehensive & sonically excellent Looking forward to the second instalments for both of these sets Edited November 3, 2010 by romualdo Quote
B. Goren. Posted November 3, 2010 Report Posted November 3, 2010 The Shorty Rogers set is very comprehensive & sonically excellent Seconded! Quote
dankarlsberg Posted November 3, 2010 Report Posted November 3, 2010 Thanks for the heads up! I just ordered the Waller vol. 6 and the Bix/Tram set. Quote
brownie Posted November 3, 2010 Report Posted November 3, 2010 There are a number of highly recommended sets among those JSPs. Would like to bring attention to the Hoagy Carmichael 'The First of the Singer Songwriters' set. It even contains material which had not been published before. Transfers and audio restoration by John R T Davis and Doug Pomeroy! Quote
