Bright Moments Posted October 31, 2010 Report Posted October 31, 2010 who are the one hit wonders of jazz? Quote
Van Basten II Posted November 1, 2010 Report Posted November 1, 2010 What constitutes a hit in the jazz world ? If you go by the same definition than in pop music, it's more of a wonder that they would have a hit than be a one hit wonder. Quote
Dan Gould Posted November 1, 2010 Report Posted November 1, 2010 Clearly Lee Morgan was a one-hit wonder. Quote
Dave James Posted November 1, 2010 Report Posted November 1, 2010 Take Five - Dave Brubeck. More - Kai Winding (not a jazz tune, but a jazz musician). Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White - Perez Prado. Agree with Van Basten II. Outside of the big band era, if any jazz guy had a hit, you can bet the farm it only happened once. Quote
medjuck Posted November 1, 2010 Report Posted November 1, 2010 Has any jazz musician had more than one hit? Was Kai Winding's "More" the hit version? Quote
GA Russell Posted November 1, 2010 Report Posted November 1, 2010 Has any jazz musician had more than one hit? Stan Getz - Desafinado and The Girl from Ipanema. Ramsey Lewis - The In Crowd, A Hard Day's Night and Wade in the Water. Young-Holt Trio/Unlimited - Wack, Wack and Soulful Strut. I won't count Al Hirt's 1964 hits. I shouldn't count Soulful Strut! Cannonball Adderley - Mercy, Mercy, Mercy and Why (Am I Treated so Bad?) Quote
CJ Shearn Posted November 1, 2010 Report Posted November 1, 2010 Wouldn't "Red Clay" and "Sugar" classify Freddie and Stanley as 1 hit wonders? What about Trane with MFT? Pat Metheny is a 1 hit wonder by his own admission as "This is Not America" with David Bowie added to the PMG was a Top 40 hit in 1985 I think. Quote
JSngry Posted November 1, 2010 Report Posted November 1, 2010 Has any jazz musician had more than one hit? Eddie Harris & Herbie Hancock did. Quote
Dave James Posted November 1, 2010 Report Posted November 1, 2010 Have we defined what constitutes a "hit" record? Quote
JSngry Posted November 1, 2010 Report Posted November 1, 2010 Back in the day you could have legit jukebox hits as well as radio hits. Quote
Guest Bill Barton Posted November 1, 2010 Report Posted November 1, 2010 Have we defined what constitutes a "hit" record? "Compared to What?" Sorry, couldn't resist... Quote
Steve Gray Posted November 1, 2010 Report Posted November 1, 2010 Jim Pepper - Witchi Tai To or however you spell it. Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted November 1, 2010 Report Posted November 1, 2010 Acker Bilk - 'Stranger on the Shore' Quote
Bright Moments Posted November 1, 2010 Author Report Posted November 1, 2010 how about nat adderley - work song? Quote
A Lark Ascending Posted November 1, 2010 Report Posted November 1, 2010 (edited) Humphrey Lyttleton - 'Bad Penny Blues' Which returned in altered form 12 years later to be a hit again for a bunch of cheeky chappies from Liverpool. 'Street Life' The Crusaders w. Randy Crawford. Got to no 5. in the UK as a single, it says on Wiki. Edited November 1, 2010 by A Lark Ascending Quote
GA Russell Posted November 1, 2010 Report Posted November 1, 2010 Dave Brubeck's Take Five b/w Blue Rondo a la Turk was a two-sided hit 45, so I don't know if that would qualify as a one hit wonder. Quote
Free For All Posted November 1, 2010 Report Posted November 1, 2010 Grover Washington "Winelight" & "Just the Two of Us" Quote
JSngry Posted November 2, 2010 Report Posted November 2, 2010 Grover Washington "Winelight" & "Just the Two of Us" And "Mister Magic"! Quote
jeffcrom Posted November 2, 2010 Report Posted November 2, 2010 Evan Parker never had another hit after "Aerobatics 3." Quote
