Bright Moments Posted October 28, 2010 Report Posted October 28, 2010 is he the real deal or just the flavor of the month? Quote
papsrus Posted October 28, 2010 Report Posted October 28, 2010 He's coming to the Sarasota Blues Fest in November. Going to try to check him out. Quote
jeffcrom Posted October 28, 2010 Report Posted October 28, 2010 He's an extremely talented trombone and trumpet player - but that doesn't mean I like all of his music. I've always loved this early picture, though: Quote
medjuck Posted October 28, 2010 Report Posted October 28, 2010 He has a song called "Hey Troy, Your Mama's Calling You" on one of the Katrina relief compilations ("Sing Me Back Home"-- a great cd btw) that is the happiest cut you'll ever hear. I never think of him as a jazz musician but what I've heard I like. Who care's if it's jazz. Quote
PHILLYQ Posted October 29, 2010 Report Posted October 29, 2010 I have the disc pictured in the first post, there's a couple of tunes I like but it sounds sometimes like he's trying too hard for sales at the xpense of music quality. A bit too slick at times. I did 'see' him(long story I won't bore y'all with it here)play as a guest with Jeff Beck in June when Beck did a Les Paul tribute, and Trombone Shorty played his ass off, he was excellent. So IMHO he's quite a capable player but he needs the right setting to shine. Quote
Brute Posted October 29, 2010 Report Posted October 29, 2010 I've never heard him but agree that this is a great shot! Quote
medjuck Posted October 29, 2010 Report Posted October 29, 2010 Trombone Shorty and Bo Didley? What's the story? Quote
jeffcrom Posted October 29, 2010 Report Posted October 29, 2010 Trombone Shorty and Bo Didley? What's the story? Don't know. The picture was taken by the great New Orleans photographer Michael Smith. I'll bet it was at Jazzfest. Quote
Bright Moments Posted December 18, 2010 Author Report Posted December 18, 2010 so i pulled the trigger and bought his cd (see post #1) and boy i am glad i did! the music is GREAT!!! this cat can PLAY!!! Quote
AllenLowe Posted December 18, 2010 Report Posted December 18, 2010 he can really play, though he sprinkles in a little more bullshit along the way than I tend to prefer (2 minute trills, for example). But he's found the formula. Quote
six string Posted December 19, 2010 Report Posted December 19, 2010 Isn't his father or uncle a well known N.O. musician? Quote
jeffcrom Posted December 19, 2010 Report Posted December 19, 2010 Isn't his father or uncle a well known N.O. musician? His real name is Troy Andrews - his brother James and cousin Glen David Andrews are musicians (trumpet and trombone). Troy and James are the grandsons of Jessie Hill, who recorded "Ooh Pah Pah Doo," a favorite New Orleans R & B song. Quote
