AndrewHill Posted October 26, 2010 Report Posted October 26, 2010 (edited) Not sure if this has been discussed before, but I just acquired a copy of Odyssey of Iska the other day and was comparing it with my copy of Moto Grosso Feio and was utterly shocked to see that these two sessions, with completely different lineups, were recorded on August 26, 1970. Was this the case or was there an error in one of the liner notes? Anybody who can clear this up for me would be greatly appreciated. I should add that I have the BN cd edition of Odyssey from 1987 and the One Way Records cd edition of Moto from 1993. Edited October 26, 2010 by Holy Ghost Quote
jeffcrom Posted October 26, 2010 Report Posted October 26, 2010 They weren't recorded the same day. Moto Grosso Feio was recorded on April 3, 1970. The August 26 date was on the original LP issue, due to carelessness, I guess, and took on a life of its own. I love Moto - I had it on eight-track tape back in the day; LP now. Some of Shorter's best playing ever. Quote
bertrand Posted October 26, 2010 Report Posted October 26, 2010 Also, the percussionist on Moto Grosso Feio is Micheline Pelzer, not 'Michelin Prell'. Bertrand. Quote
AndrewHill Posted October 26, 2010 Author Report Posted October 26, 2010 (edited) Thank you Jeff and Bertrand. I agree that these recordings are fascinating to say the least. Edited October 26, 2010 by Holy Ghost Quote
sidewinder Posted October 26, 2010 Report Posted October 26, 2010 I find that Wayne's playing on these albums and the style of group playing has quite a lot of similarities to his work over the past few years. Excellent sessions ! Quote

Excellent sessions ! Agree! I really like what he's doing here, almost a kind of acoustic version of what Miles was doing with electric instruments, say around In a Silent Way or so. I especially like the line-up on Odyssey with the two basses, two drums, vibes and guitar. Wayne was really doing some exciting stuff here! Quote
sidewinder Posted October 26, 2010 Report Posted October 26, 2010 Yes. There are also inklings of that minimalist and very impressionistic approach on the 'Etcetera' quartet session and the rest of the material issued by King Records as 'The Collector'. Quote
vegheadjones Posted October 26, 2010 Report Posted October 26, 2010 Moto Grosso Feio is one of my favorites in particular. lotsa late night listnenings there... Quote

Dang, so I need both Etcetera and The Collector? Former was easy to find, the latter... not so much. Quote

No - if you have Etcetera and the CD issue of Adam's Apple you'll have all of the material from The Collector. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted October 27, 2010 Report Posted October 27, 2010 Ah - my Adam's Apple is on LP as well. But good to know. Quote
sidewinder Posted October 28, 2010 Report Posted October 28, 2010 (edited) Ah - my Adam's Apple is on LP as well. But good to know. 'Teo's Bag' is on 'The Collector' but not 'Etcetera', Clifford. At least on the LPs. 'Teo's Bag' turns up on that 6CD Herbie Hancock box as well I think. Edited October 28, 2010 by sidewinder Quote

To avoid pontential confusion: "Teo's Bag" and "The Collector" are alternate titles for the same tune, and it was recorded at one of the sessions that yielded the 'Adam's Apple' album. So the album 'Etcetera' contains everything recorded on June 14, 1965, while the Japanese Shorter LP 'The Collector' (GXF 3059) substituted "Toy Tune" from that session for "The Collector/Teo's Bag" (found as a bonus track on the CD release of 'Adam's Apple'). clifford_thornton Posted October 28, 2010 Report Posted October 28, 2010 So it's only one track I would be missing. Thanks. Quote

Any chance we can hear this one???? Quote
jazzbo Posted October 30, 2010 Report Posted October 30, 2010 We won't hear that as long as Michael Cuscuna is in command of the vaults. And it may not be in the vaults any longer. My guess is that he reviewed the tape with Wayne and maybe gave it to him to destroy. (Michael told me that he did that with Horace Silver and a tape of his). Quote
Daniel A Posted October 30, 2010 Report Posted October 30, 2010 I seem to remember that Wayne is said to have been very dissatisfied with Duke Pearson's production on that date. There's a thread somewhere here, I believe. This is not the thread in question, but thereĀ“s something about Wayne's opinion of Duke Pearson: Quote
