paul secor Posted October 21, 2010 Report Posted October 21, 2010 Syl Johnson is a fine performer who's had some great moments in his recording career, but I can't imagine wanting or needing 81 tracks by him. That said, I'm sure there are fans who can't wait for this to be released. That's what makes them true fans and that's part of what keeps music alive. Quote
soulpope Posted October 22, 2010 Report Posted October 22, 2010 Like Paul mentioned, probably 81 tracks are a little bit too much as Syl Johnson was not the most versatile singer (to me !!) - nevertheless thumbs up for this labour of love supplied via the guys from Numero !! Quote
Alexander Posted October 22, 2010 Report Posted October 22, 2010 I've heard some might fine tracks by Johnson on the Hi label... Quote
JSngry Posted October 22, 2010 Report Posted October 22, 2010 81 tracks is ok, but I don't know if I need LP & CD in a single package? Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted October 22, 2010 Report Posted October 22, 2010 81 tracks is ok, but I don't know if I need LP & CD in a single package? Too bad they didn't include 8-tracks. Quote
Stefan Wood Posted November 17, 2010 Author Report Posted November 17, 2010 (edited) Got this from Dusty Groove. Listened to the "Is It Because I'm Black" lp, and was floored by how different he sounded from his later Hi Records years. The book alone is worth the price - apparently this was a project 4 years in the making, a lot of it spent weeding the truth from the fiction that Sly himself created. He was huge in Chicago, but any attempts to break through nationally were thwarted, always seeming by bad circumstances, the least of which by a man who used to work with him, Al Green. Addition: Finished reading the booklet last night, which is on par with the research and reviews given in a standard Mosaic box. I'm really digging the "Is It Because I'm Black?" session. John L Posted November 17, 2010 Report Posted November 17, 2010 81 tracks of Syl is not too much. Quote
Tom in RI Posted November 18, 2010 Report Posted November 18, 2010 This set was highlighted on NPR recently. Quote

Steve Gray Posted December 4, 2010 Report Posted December 4, 2010 NY Times article: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/12/03/arts/music/03syl.html?_r=1&ref=music Seems as if Syl Johnson is becoming the Next Big Thing. Funny reading about Syl's problems with record companies. 3 or 4 years ago I saw him in London at the Barbican and between numbers he took a copy of one of his ACE CD reissues out of his pocket and said that he had never received any money for it. Someone in the audience, presumably an ACE employee, shouted at him that he would talk to him after the show. Syl then got back to doing what he does best, singing, but according to that article he is now pretty good at litigating. Quote
