Christiern Posted December 28, 2003 Author Report Posted December 28, 2003 Louis posed for this photo in NYC and sent it to Lil. The inscription reads: To my Dear wife, whom I'll love until I die. From Hubby Louis Armstrong 9/23/29 Quote
Christiern Posted December 28, 2003 Author Report Posted December 28, 2003 Another unpublished photo. That's Charlie Shavers on the right (in front) and I believe the lady is Beryl Booker, seated next to ARt Tatum. Anyone recognize the rest? I was given this picture by Elmer Snowden, who got it from Beryl. Quote

Christiern Posted December 28, 2003 Author Report Posted December 28, 2003 This is a Lil Armstrong Riverside session that took place at The Birdhouse, Chicago, September 7, 1961. The clarinetists (front) are Franz Jackson (left) and Darnell Howard (right). Next to them are Al Wynn (trombone, on left) and Eddie Smith (trumpet, on right). The trumpeter on the left is Leroi Nabors and the trombonist on the right is Preston Jackson. The trumpeter in the middle is Bill Martin. That's Booker Washington on drums, Pops Foster on bass, Lil on piano, and yours truly seated on the left, with a stopwatch at the ready. It was a strange combination of musicians. I had intended to do two separate sessions with two different front lines, but my engineers were late and slow, so--with little time left before Oscar Peterson was to take over the bandstand--I found it most expedient to simply put them all together. Harold_Z Posted December 28, 2003 Report Posted December 28, 2003 That's from the Chicago Living Legends series and one of those that I unfortunately missed. I have all the New Orleans series on vinyl but just a few of the Chicago on both vinyl and cd. I think it's time to acquire what I missed from those. There's not a dud in the bunch. Chris - for those recordings alone you made a great contribution to jazz. Please keep the photos coming. Is there any unreleased stuff from the Chicago or New Orleans Living Legend dates? Quote

Christiern Posted December 28, 2003 Author Report Posted December 28, 2003 Here's Alberta Hunter on one of her many USO tours, which she led in two wars to Europe, India, Korea, etc. The soldier is unidentified, but that's actor Melvyn Douglas on the lower left. Quote
Christiern Posted December 28, 2003 Author Report Posted December 28, 2003 (edited) And, in case any of you never came across it, here's the good advice Louis used to hand out on a little card... Edited December 28, 2003 by Christiern Quote
Christiern Posted December 28, 2003 Author Report Posted December 28, 2003 Time has not been kind to this autographed photo of the Nat King Cole Trio, which Elmer Snowden (his pianist was, at one time, Duke) had taped to a wall. Quote
Bright Moments Posted June 7, 2004 Report Posted June 7, 2004 this thread is worth another peek! B) Quote
Christiern Posted June 7, 2004 Author Report Posted June 7, 2004 While I dig up and scan some photos, here's an interesting letter I received from Bernie Nierow (aka Peter Nero) when I wrote that a sadly commercial George Benson LP was, after all, better than any by Peter Nero. Quote
Bright Moments Posted June 7, 2004 Report Posted June 7, 2004 wow chris, i bet you didn't expect that! i was hoping that by reviving this thread i would entice you to dig into the archives for some more gold!!!! Quote
Dmitry Posted June 7, 2004 Report Posted June 7, 2004 Since we're on the subject of Elmer Snowden, here's his calling card from my [rather slim] collection of jazz stuff. My guess it's circa 1930s. On the back there's a note in pencil, I am at the Powelton. Quote
Christiern Posted June 7, 2004 Author Report Posted June 7, 2004 (edited) Thanks, Dmitry, I never saw that card before. This was taken in my Philadelphia apartment in 1959 when I brought Elmer Snowden and Lonnie Johnson together. Left to right: Lpnnie, yours truly, John Hammond, unidentified drummer (Elmer worked with him), and Elmer. John was there (as was Orrin Keepnews) because I hoped one of them would be interested in recording Lonnie and Elmer (or at least one of them), but while both showed enthusiasm, no recording contract was pulled out of a pocket. When I took the tapes made that day to Bob Weinstock, a series of Prestige albums resulted. Edited June 7, 2004 by Christiern Quote
JSngry Posted June 7, 2004 Report Posted June 7, 2004 Shame on Peter Nero for dissing a fellow labelmate. The least he could have done was dump on Roger Williams... Quote
JSngry Posted June 7, 2004 Report Posted June 7, 2004 That John Hammond really knew how to leer, didn't he! Quote
Christiern Posted June 7, 2004 Author Report Posted June 7, 2004 Here's a photo I took in Perugia, Italy, during the Umbria '84 Jazz Festival. It is of Johnny Griffin relaxing during dinner time in the garden restaurant of the Hotel Rosetta, where most of us stayed. Ah, those incredible truffles-covered pasta dishes! Quote
Christiern Posted June 8, 2004 Author Report Posted June 8, 2004 Here's Red Rodney--same place and date: Quote
Christiern Posted June 8, 2004 Author Report Posted June 8, 2004 And here is Jimmy Cobb at the same festival... Quote
Christiern Posted June 8, 2004 Author Report Posted June 8, 2004 On April 11, 1961, I brought blues singer Ida Cox into the Plaza Sound studio for the first of two sessions that became a Riverside album (Blues for Rampart Street). Here she is with Jo Jones. The other accompanyists were: Roy Eldridge, Coleman Hawkins, Sammy Price, and Milt Hinton. Not a bad lineup. Quote
Bright Moments Posted June 8, 2004 Report Posted June 8, 2004 chris, these photos are amazing! Keep 'em coming! B) Quote
Christiern Posted June 9, 2004 Author Report Posted June 9, 2004 (edited) Here are some photos from a Howard McGhee session I did December 8, 1961. Since I only can upload one image in each post, it will take several posts. BTW I did the session on my own and sold it--it appeared first on Fontana, then on Black Lion, Under Howard's name, as Sharp Edge The first one shows Howard and George Coleman: Edited June 9, 2004 by Christiern Quote
