GA Russell Posted September 30, 2010 Report Posted September 30, 2010 (edited) A young Chicago singer named Milton Suggs has a new album out called Things to Come. He's good! I think of him as a baritone Donny Hathaway. Is anyone familiar with him? The album has young Chicago players on it like Marquis Hill on trumpet, Vincent Gardner on trombone and Willerm Delisfort on piano. Although the band plays jazz throughout, Suggs' singing has an R&B quality to it, and I can imagine some of the songs being played on soul radio stations. http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/MiltonSuggs Edited May 22, 2012 by GA Russell Quote
Larry Kart Posted September 30, 2010 Report Posted September 30, 2010 Sampled a bit of this; he's talented, reminds me some of Al Jarreau. He's the son of bassist Milton Suggs, who worked with Mary Lou Wiliams. Quote
GA Russell Posted October 7, 2010 Author Report Posted October 7, 2010 I heard the 'Round Midnight track from this album yesterday on Sirius. Quote
webbcity Posted October 8, 2010 Report Posted October 8, 2010 Wow...love the samples! Thanks for posting this. I'm a fan of his dad's bass playing too...is he still with us? Quote
GA Russell Posted May 22, 2012 Author Report Posted May 22, 2012 (edited) I received word today that Milton Suggs' new album called Lyrical, Volume 1, will be released July 24. I'm looking forward to hearing it. Edited May 22, 2012 by GA Russell Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted May 22, 2012 Report Posted May 22, 2012 All of this gives me the creeps. I knew the fine bass player Milton Suggs in Chicago - he worked with Betty Carter and others. He was a kind person killed way too early by disease. Can't shake that to enjoy the rest. Sorry to fuck up the thread. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted May 23, 2012 Report Posted May 23, 2012 Yeah, every time I see the name I think the same thing, Chuck. Never knew the bassist personally but his playing is/was great. Quote
GA Russell Posted July 5, 2012 Author Report Posted July 5, 2012 I've had a chance to listen to the new Lyrical, Vol. 1, and I think that if it were on a major label, it would have a good chance of being a top ten-selling jazz album of the year. Suggs wrote the lyrics to all of the songs. Most of the songs are mainstream jazz classics, like Armageddon, Footprints, Infant Eyes, Ceora, Stablemates, Virgo and Lady Bird. I like the songs, and I like Suggs' singing, so I like the album. I'm confident that it will get plenty of airplay on Sirius. Quote
GA Russell Posted July 26, 2012 Author Report Posted July 26, 2012 I see that both Things to Come and Lyrical, Vol. 1 are available at Spotify. Quote
GA Russell Posted November 1, 2012 Author Report Posted November 1, 2012 I see that Milton Suggs has moved to New York, and that he will be at Small's Nov. 28. http://www.miltonsuggs.com/contents#!__contents/calendar Quote
