scottb
How is this one from Byrd? Is $20 too much to pay? I like Byrd in Hand, Byrd in Flight, Slow Drag, Blackjack. I see Fuego is from 1959 which would suggest I might like it as the Byrds I don't like tend to be late 60s, 70s work especially with the Mizell Brothers. robviti
i like this recording, but i don't know if i'd pay $20 for it. are you in the u.s.? i ask this because i think a local store may have a copy in stock for less.
Claude
It is one of my favourite Donald Byrd sessions, also because of the presence of Jackie McLean. The title track is amazing. I have the US release from the late 80's and the sound is not very good but ok.
king ubu
I like it as well, got mine used for half of that price, and I think I would not have payed that much for it. ubu
JSngry
the Byrds I don't like tend to be late 60s, 70s work I dunno, THE NOTORIOUS BYRD BROTHERS & SWEETHEART OF THE RODEO are pretty much classics, imo...
JSngry
How is this one from Byrd? Is $20 too much to pay? Seriously - Very good, and yes.
couw
are you looking at a japanese import of any type or at the domestic release? Amazon.com lists a domestic copy for 15$ which still seems high but definitely more reasonable.
John B
Fuego - yes. $20 - no.
scottb
It is actually a "Like New" copy on Half.com. With shipping it would come to about $20.
JSngry
You can do better. Be patient.
John B
you can "pre-buy" on Half. Put in a pre-order for 10 or 12 dollars. One will turn up in that price range in a matter of time.
Parkertown
I'd only pay that much for the TOCJ or the JRVG.

Morganized
It is one of my favourite Donald Byrd sessions, also because of the presence of Jackie McLean. The title track is amazing. I have the US release from the late 80's and the sound is not very good but ok. I agree with Claude about Jackie McLean on this one. In some ways it is almost his session. In fact I recently picked this one up myself. In the $8 range. I had been looking for it for a long time. After a number of listens, I got in the mood for some more Jackie and picked up New Soil. New Soil was recorded in May 1959 and Fuego in Oct. 1959. Byrd and Mclean are featured on both. I was thinking at the time that maybe they should have made Byrd leader on New Soil and Mclean leader on Fuego. Byrd has a solo on tract 3, Greasy, on New Soil that is just incredible. As has been previouly mentioned, Jackie plays wonderfully throughout Fuego. Many similarities on these two. I think $20 bucks may be a little much for this one but it is a good session. If you like early Byrd I think you will like this one. It is similar to his early stuff and I have the domestic release and do not find the sound bad at all. Whatever you do you will enjoy this one whenever you get it.
brownie
Excellent album I have enjoyed ever since it was released. Still have the original Blue Nole LP. Donald Byrd was really playing then. And it's one of Jackie Mac's best sideman date.

JSngry
BUT... I avoided buying the LP for several years because of the butt-ugly color scheme of the cover. I still don't listen to it as often as I should becasue the cover creeps me out in some small way. Strange but true.
Brad
I think it's a great session, especially Lex Humphries. He never gets enough attention. Anyway, I bought the JRVG for about $20 on ebay a couple of months ago and sold my domestic copy (the old silver and blue label) for only $10. So, I'd wait. On the other hand, I did the same thing with Kenny Drew's Undercurrent and the US version netted me an incredible $27 (more than I expected). All in all, I think I'd wait for now. It will come up again I'm sure.
connoisseur series500
Here's another vote for the session. I also think $20 is a bit steep. Don't recall what I paid for mine, but it was around $15, I think.
