BeBop Posted September 20, 2010 Report Posted September 20, 2010 Picked this up from another board. Hoping it's not so: RIP Buddy Collette -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I don't have any details yet but did get word from pianist Mike Melvoin that Buddy Collette died yesterday. I'm sure more news will come forth. RIP Buddy! __________________ Always Know, Steve Schwartz Jazz on WGBH Friday, 8p-12a WGBH, 89.7FM, Boston www.wgbh.org/jazz Quote

chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted September 21, 2010 Report Posted September 21, 2010 Buddy Collette was the best he was SO appealing to me i liked all his stuff. i admit i dont have that 4-flute player record on mercury, but i love his flute and clairnet and sax and his bands and configurations and location and it all, buddy collette is like the west coast hank mobley Quote
medjuck Posted September 21, 2010 Report Posted September 21, 2010 He used to come sometimes to meetings of the LA Duke Ellington Society. IIRC played at one of them. A great man and a nice guy. Quote
sidewinder Posted September 21, 2010 Report Posted September 21, 2010 (edited) RIP Buddy. What a shame - I heard him reminisce about the Central Avenue scene of the 40s on one occasion at a panel session. Certainly came across as a very nice guy. Must have a re-read of his bio. Teasing the Korean Posted September 21, 2010 Report Posted September 21, 2010 A real fave of mine. I am hosting next week's edition of "Latino 54" on www.wmnf.org WMNF 88.5, and will pay tribute to Buddy by playing a track from the greatest album ever made. Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted September 21, 2010 Report Posted September 21, 2010 I have to admit I didn't know he was still alive. I really liked his playing. Thanks Buddy Collette for all the music you've left the world. R.I.P. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted September 21, 2010 Report Posted September 21, 2010 While working on the Uptown Mingus project, I spoke with him on the phone a couple times and he was really helpful identifying players involved - I played music (over the phone) and he gave a running commentary. I won't forget that. Quote
Larry Kart Posted September 22, 2010 Report Posted September 22, 2010 Colette (on clarinet), Chico Hamilton (both quite young), et al. backing Fred Astaire in a scene from "You'll Never Get Rich"(1941). Some fine Astaire here, especially toward the end: Quote
clifford_thornton Posted September 22, 2010 Report Posted September 22, 2010 Wow. They don't do things like this anymore... Quote
Guest Bill Barton Posted September 22, 2010 Report Posted September 22, 2010 Sweet clip! Thanks, Larry! And R.I.P. Mr. Collette. So many wonderful players movin' on the last few days/weeks... Sad. But we should celebrate their legacies. Quote
