Jim Alfredson Posted December 18, 2003 Report Posted December 18, 2003 i was glad they pilloried that lou reed piece of crap. what a load that dude is. he's one of the worst cases of a guy being taken way too seriously for a VERY slim body of inspired work... I agree completely. Quote
Jazzmoose Posted December 18, 2003 Report Posted December 18, 2003 Clementine! Please be careful! What if a PRESTIGOUS ROCK CRITIC had accidently read that post of yours? His blood would be on your hands! (...and my keyboard, Chris's monitor, Jim's hard drive...man, those guys blow up real good!) Quote

Jazzmoose Posted December 18, 2003 Report Posted December 18, 2003 (I should point out that, while I agree with you guys, that "slim body of inspired work" is absolutely incredible! ) Quote
dave9199 Posted December 19, 2003 Report Posted December 19, 2003 What does that slim body consist of besides The Velvet Underground? Metal Machine Music? Quote
Jazzmoose Posted December 19, 2003 Report Posted December 19, 2003 I'd say that's enough, but then I'd also throw in Rock and Roll Animal, my choice for best live rock album (all together now) "of all time"... Quote
JohnJ Posted December 19, 2003 Report Posted December 19, 2003 Well, The Velvet Underground were primarily Lou's baby. Their four studio albums are, in my opinion anyway, among the truly essential recordings of the rock era. As for his solo stuff, well true it is pretty hit and miss. At its best though, on albums such as Transformer, Berlin, the Blue Mask and New York it is only a small step down from the brilliance of the Velvet's. Obvioulsly I am a fan, but I really think he is one of the most important figures in the history of rock music. Quote
RDK Posted December 19, 2003 Report Posted December 19, 2003 I agree with Moose and John about Lou. His early work essential, his later stuff more erratic - but his best is still pretty darn good. However, I also can't disagree with the Onion about his Poe album... Quote
7/4 Posted December 19, 2003 Report Posted December 19, 2003 What does that slim body consist of besides The Velvet Underground? Metal Machine Music? I like MMM, it works great at low volume. (not kidding!) Quote
JohnJ Posted December 19, 2003 Report Posted December 19, 2003 Clementine, much as I like John Cale, and agree he has written some really good songs, nothing he has written compares with Lou's Velvet's output. Remember that almost all of the classics, from 'Waiting for the Man' to 'Sweet Jane' were written by Lou Reed. There are at least half a dozen that are among the greatest rock songs ever. Quote
doubleM Posted December 19, 2003 Report Posted December 19, 2003 Another song by Lou Reed that doesn't suck is Magic and Loss . Quote
dave9199 Posted December 19, 2003 Report Posted December 19, 2003 I appreciate your avatar doubleM! I'm a big Husker Du fan myself. Quote
