neveronfriday Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 (edited) Tv series, available as DVD ("remastered" ... my a**), runs for 282 minutes. Director's cut is better both in sound and image quality, but the longer version is just the better film (Peterson's comments to the contrary not withstanding). Cheers! Edit: Director's cut: 208 minutes. Edited January 7, 2005 by deus62 Quote

This thread was the first, but for a while there it seemed like everything I did, or talked about with others resulted in the same response: "You know, that's supposed to be one of the warning signs of depression." Well, to make a long story short, I saw the doctor today, and am now on antidepressants. This is something I should have done years ago, but I'm one of those stubborn males who has to be forced into the doctors office. The last straw was last week when I was simply flooded with despair while at work for about half an hour. Well, we'll see how this stuff works. Hopefully I'll be back posting in my usual way soon. Then again, how do I know what the "real me" is at this point? Scary stuff... Forgot about this thread. How is this going, Moose? Are you still on the anti-depressants? Quote
Big Al Posted January 7, 2005 Author Report Posted January 7, 2005 As one who's been there, done that, and still going, I'm also concerned as to how this is working for you. I must've missed your story the first time around, but I can identify with damn-near every word of it. It's like reading about my own path to meds. So yeah, Moose: please tell us how you're doing. The XXL version would be too tense for me, I was sweating after about an hour of this one. Mind you, I don't think anything can beat Fignon v. Lemond's 1989 Tour for tension and suspense there's a 6 part television mini series that runs for a couple of hours more. But I see your attention span only lasts for 8 seconds, so... Sorry for the hijack of sorts, but it's the 'Director's Cut'. says on the cover...duh.... And for the record, anti-depressants? I can empathise with anyone whose started them and come off them. I've been off them now for 4 months and I feel normal now, whether that is better or worse, time will tell. Quote
Jazzmoose Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 (edited) Eeep! Old threads never die... Yep; still on the Paxil CR. It hasn't stopped the 'lows' completely, but the worst days are a hell of a lot better than they were before I started taking it. A rare bit of honesty that I may come back and delete later: the best way to see how I'm doing seems to be to watch my posting here. If I'm posting, I'm fine. If the posts are getting few and far between, the depression is back. If I'm calling someone an asshole on the political thread, the depression is still in charge, but improvement is coming fast... So I guess you guys are the first to know, after Barb anyway... Tony, I can't imagine ever wanting to get off of antidepressents, but just changing medication while my doctor was 'experimenting' on me to find the best treatment was bad enough. I've never been worse off than the two days when one med was wearing off and the other hadn't kicked in yet... Edited January 7, 2005 by Jazzmoose Quote

I've been on the same med for about five years now, and if I go more than two days without it, watch out! Quote

Edit: Director's cut: 208 minutes. The TV series was reshown on the BBC towards the end of last year. Absolutely magnificent - the suspense as they run through the Straits of Gibraltar then get attacked by the destroyer is something else. I recall when that series first came out and was shown on TV here - must have been around 1985. Around the same time there was another excellent German series called 'Heimat' which told the story of a family through WWII and beyond in an area that I seem to recall was called Hunsruck. One of the best TV series of the 1980s - I wonder if it is available on DVD with subtitles? Quote

couw Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 a bit expensive, but you get 6 disks. Most broadcasts, including the one on German television were shortened, I guess this must be the extended version. Strangely enough, amazon.de sells a 5 disk set (German only). Quote
Brad Posted January 7, 2005 Report Posted January 7, 2005 Moose, hope it gets better. I suffer from tinnitis although it's gotten better. When I first got it a year ago and couldn't sleep, couldn't concentrate, I was about ready to take the pipe. I was close to checking out. To help me get to sleep, I was taking Xanax and Benadryl, which at least got me about 3-4 hours a night. Eventually, one of my Drs. told me to get a life and that changed my outlook. I generally sleep better and have only had to take Xanax or benadryl a couple of times. But I get tired easily and it can really wear you down. Quote
tonym Posted January 8, 2005 Report Posted January 8, 2005 To tell you the truth Moose, one of the main reasons for me coming off the tablets was that it was affecting my you-know-what. About 2 weeks after stopping I had the horn like you wouldn't believe. Each case is completely different and each medication has different effects on each individual. If I ever felt that I was slumping as low as I was, then I wouldn't hesitate in seeing my quack again though. Hope you get through this. Quote
Leeway Posted January 8, 2005 Report Posted January 8, 2005 FQWIW, antidepressants can be extremely beneficial for many people but some cautions are in order: They should not be taken like other prescription meds, but need to be accompanied by therapy. Most MDs just prescribe and forget. There should be follow-up sessions with therapists who can uncover the underlying causes for depression. After taking A-Ds for a while, one has to be really careful about stopping. The adverse affects can be a real problem, and even dangerous. Stopping should meds should be dne with care and medical supervision. Quote

Ah. Well, you just pop a Cialis with each Paxil and let nature take it's course.. Seriously, the doctor warned me about that and told me we'd switch to another med if it happened, but I didn't notice any change. Of course, I'm not a raving nineteen year old any more either, but what the hey... Quote
brownie Posted January 8, 2005 Report Posted January 8, 2005 Recommended sleep-inducing music (and pretty weird improvisional tunes by the way...): Lauren Newton/Joelle Leandre/Urs Leimgruber 'Out of Sound' (Leo CD LR137). The tracklist is: - Out of Sound - Sleeptalk - Sleepwalk - Zuzuben - Reverie - Mondsucht - Somnanbulism I - Nuit Bruit - Somnanbulisdm II - I Think... - The Insomniacs - Somnanbulism III - Trio Boom - Nocturne - Into Sound Bet that insomniacs will be deep in sleep before the 50:35 playing time is over. Haven't tried it myself. I have no problems getting to sleep Quote
alankin Posted January 8, 2005 Report Posted January 8, 2005 (edited) I love some of the listed side effects on medications, e.g., sleep meds ("may cause insomnia"), adhd meds ("may cause hyperactivity"), prostate meds ("not to be used if pregnant" !), etc. Edited January 8, 2005 by alankin Quote
