colllin Posted September 9, 2010 Report Posted September 9, 2010 (edited) Hi. I'm looking for straight ahead jazz with good banjo solos. So far I have only found 3 tracks by Chuck Wayne - "Greensleeves" "On Green Dolphin Street" and "Lovely." (Those have banjo guitar (6 string) and I don't care if it's 5 string or 6 - the sound is what I'm looking for.) I know there are a lot of really early recordings with banjo, but I'd prefer something more hi-fi. I have listened to samples of Bela Fleck, but I'm looking for something more traditional sounding - traditional in every way except that a banjo solo is featured. (If Bela has traditional sounding recordings, let me know.) 50's and 60's recordings preferred, but later stuff is OK. Any recommendations? Thank you for your help! -Colin Edited September 10, 2010 by Colin Mathers Quote

This is a very cool album! I'm always on the look out for something different and this definitely qualifies. Thanks! Quote
AllenLowe Posted September 10, 2010 Report Posted September 10, 2010 I recorded a free-jazz banjo piece in 2007 - Quote
kh1958 Posted September 10, 2010 Report Posted September 10, 2010 It's a blues album, but Otis Taylor's Recapturing the Banjo is worthwhile. http://www.amazon.com/Recapturing-the-Banjo/dp/B0019EF4Q6/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1284132107&sr=8-1-fkmr0 Quote
Christiern Posted September 11, 2010 Report Posted September 11, 2010 I have posted one full-length track from Elmer's "Harlem Banjo" album on my blog. Here is a direct link to "Rinning Wild" Quote
seeline Posted September 11, 2010 Report Posted September 11, 2010 Was Elmer related to these folks, by any chance? Quote
