JSngry Posted September 9, 2010 Author Report Posted September 9, 2010 That Iapetus album, and by extension the man who made it, meant a lot to me at one point in my life....showed me how following the trail but not strictly staying on it could lead to some pretty delightful places. Quote
Indestructible! Posted September 9, 2010 Report Posted September 9, 2010 Ah hell. I liked his last works on the Origin label (Gratitude especially). RIP, Mr. Caliman. May your spirit continue to soar! Quote
jazzkrow Posted September 9, 2010 Report Posted September 9, 2010 His new CD with Pete Christlieb on Origin Records was just released. Damn! Got a chance to see him a few times in Seattle. RIP... Quote
CJ Shearn Posted September 9, 2010 Report Posted September 9, 2010 Damn man. RIP. Just as he was experiencing a resurgence too. Quote
Clunky Posted September 9, 2010 Report Posted September 9, 2010 Ah hell. I liked his last works on the Origin label (Gratitude especially). RIP, Mr. Caliman. May your spirit continue to soar! Agreed "Gratitide" is good session. Surely too young, very sad for his family and friends especially. Quote
jlhoots Posted September 9, 2010 Report Posted September 9, 2010 The best psychedelic post-Lost Quinted album you never heard. Be nice if that got issued on CD. RIP Quote
Lazaro Vega Posted September 11, 2010 Report Posted September 11, 2010 An important member of the Seattle jazz community according to John Ewing who's members took lessons from Caliman, as did Thomas Marriott. Recently ran across Caliman while reading about Horace Tapscott's Pan Afrikan People's Arkestra. Glad he was able to share some of that life wisdom with many during his final years, and happy Origin records was dedicated to recording him frequently. Quote
Guest Bill Barton Posted September 16, 2010 Report Posted September 16, 2010 I haven't been online much in the last few days for various reasons but definitely want to check in on this thread, as Hadley Caliman was an iconic figure on Seattle's jazz scene. Since moving here in 2001, one of the most emotionally compelling shows I attended was the CD release party for Gratitude at Tula's. I had the chance to hear him in performance a few other times as well, and to meet him and speak briefly with him. What a truly nice man. He will be sorely missed. R.I.P. Quote
