peterintoronto Posted September 3, 2010 Report Posted September 3, 2010 Didn't see anything posted on here yet, but just found out that Noah Howard has died. May one of my heroes and a true musical god rest in peace. Quote
colinmce Posted September 3, 2010 Report Posted September 3, 2010 RIP. I will spin At Judson Hall today. Quote
AllenLowe Posted September 3, 2010 Report Posted September 3, 2010 was he still living in France? Quote
paul secor Posted September 3, 2010 Report Posted September 3, 2010 Hope this isn't true - too many deaths in the jazz world recently. Quote
Chalupa Posted September 3, 2010 Report Posted September 3, 2010 That's sad. RIP.Now to blast Black Ark! Quote
Chalupa Posted September 3, 2010 Report Posted September 3, 2010 (It's true. I just read the annoucement on his FB page.) Quote
clifford_thornton Posted September 3, 2010 Report Posted September 3, 2010 Another major figure gone, and too young. RIP and thanks. Quote
paul secor Posted September 4, 2010 Report Posted September 4, 2010 Enjoyed his ESP sides, but for some reason I didn't keep up with his recording career. Don't know why - probably missed out on some good music. RIP, Mr. Howard. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted September 4, 2010 Report Posted September 4, 2010 I think he got much, much better post-ESP. Found his own very melodic thing, and seemed like a nice guy. Quote

clifford_thornton Posted September 5, 2010 Report Posted September 5, 2010 Apparently his sudden passing was due to a brain aneurysm. So sad. Quote
Chalupa Posted September 11, 2010 Report Posted September 11, 2010 Dave Burrell, at the end of Thursday night's show, got up and said that the set that he had just played(w/ Sabir Mateen & William Parker) was for Noah Howard. He then went on to say some really nice stuff about Noah. It was a touching moment at the end of an incredible performance. There were audio/video recordings made for possible future release. Quote
Leeway Posted September 13, 2010 Report Posted September 13, 2010 I love Noah's early stuff; definitely "Fire Music." I'm lucky to have a vinyl copy of "Patterns" on Altsax Records. It's available on CD; grab it, it's heavy-hitting, with a fantastic performance by Han Bennink ((Noah too of course!). "Black Ark" is another favorite. However, I disagree that his later, post-ESP, work was an improvement. The fire is definitely gone, and much of it treads perilously close to New Age music. I suppose some might like that, and it is probably not possible to burn as brighly as he did early in his career, but I treasure the ESP and other work of that period. Quote

That was really cool of Dave to say, as I'm a fan of all involved too. Quote
ep1str0phy Posted September 13, 2010 Report Posted September 13, 2010 RIP. There's something special in all of it, though the quartet music with Frank Wright holds a special place for me. I'd venture to say that it's in the top tier of energy music. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted September 14, 2010 Report Posted September 14, 2010 Yup. Destination Out has a nice Noah Howard post up right now. Still need to get that Live at the Swing Club LP. Quote
Utevsky Posted September 14, 2010 Report Posted September 14, 2010 I played three extended Noah Howard tracks -- from Ole, Judson Hall and Village Vanguard -- on "Straight, No Chaser" on KBCS last night. For two weeks after broadcast, you can listen to this and other KBCS programs in the station's audio archives: http://kbcsweb.bellevuecollege.edu/playlist/archive/?ShowID=15145 Quote
Swinger Posted September 16, 2010 Report Posted September 16, 2010 I don't know much about him or his music but I recently bought Black Ark as vinyl at sound323.com . I love it! Quote
Cyril Posted October 16, 2010 Report Posted October 16, 2010 was he still living in France? Noah moved to Tervuren (Brussels), Belgium in 1983. Here's an obit Quote
