News reports state that photographer Herman Leonard passed away on August 14th. He created many memorable jazz images, and, one might say that he helped defined the image of jazz in the public mind. His 1948 photograph of the young Dexter Gordon (with the cigarette smoke swirling upwards) is surely iconic.

What a brilliant photographer! Mark's comments sum it up. So dramatic, so theatrical, always telling a story.
