sidewinder Posted August 14, 2010 Report Posted August 14, 2010 Sorry to hear this. Yet another of the great artists passes - RIP. Quote
JSngry Posted August 14, 2010 Report Posted August 14, 2010 A life most certainly not wasted. RIP & much, much love. Quote
Christiern Posted August 14, 2010 Report Posted August 14, 2010 I still think that "Nothing but a Man," the 1964 film she starred in with Ivan Dixon, is one of the best black films made in the U.S. I also wish they had written an intelligent script and cast Abbey as Billie Holliday, instead of the Ross woman. Floating around somewhere, not in any of my closets, is a 1-hour TV interview I did with Abbey some 30 years ago. Quote
Dave James Posted August 14, 2010 Report Posted August 14, 2010 Sad news indeed. No matter what she did, she approached it with total commitment and great passion. Quote
tranemonk Posted August 14, 2010 Report Posted August 14, 2010 Horrible... One of the true marks of a great musician is when you KNOW there will NEVER be another Abbey Lincoln... You will be missed.... Quote
ghost of miles Posted August 14, 2010 Report Posted August 14, 2010 Crap. A life most certainly not wasted indeed, but I still hate to see her go. Quote
Stereojack Posted August 14, 2010 Report Posted August 14, 2010 I also wish they had written an intelligent script and cast Abbey as Billie Holliday, instead of the Ross woman. Amen! But it was Ross' star power that got the film made. Quote
medjuck Posted August 14, 2010 Report Posted August 14, 2010 All of her records are worth owing but her last one "Abbey Sings Abbey" is a killer-- all about life, regret, love and mortality. I think Tranemonk nailed it: there was no one like her and there probably never will be. Quote

Chuck Nessa Posted August 14, 2010 Author Report Posted August 14, 2010 She was a special human at a necessary time. Quote
Guest Bill Barton Posted August 14, 2010 Report Posted August 14, 2010 Well said, Chuck. More than music, way more... A life well-lived. R.I.P. to a great artist and evolved human being. Quote
Big Al Posted August 14, 2010 Report Posted August 14, 2010 One of the true marks of a great musician is when you KNOW there will NEVER be another Abbey Lincoln... You will be missed.... Amen. RIP to a classy, beautiful lady. Quote
Patrick Posted August 15, 2010 Report Posted August 15, 2010 "Bird alone, flying high Flying through a clouded sky Sending mournful soulful sounds Soaring over troubled grounds" You Gotta Pay the Band (Verve, 1991) was my point of entry with Abbey. First checked it out from the Evanston Public Library--many an evening spent listening to this after a grinding grad school day. Thanks Abbey. Keep soaring. Quote

One of my faves too, Patrick, with a great autumnal turn by Stan Getz as well. Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted August 15, 2010 Report Posted August 15, 2010 RIP AbbeyPlaying her album "That's Him" with Sonny Rollins, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chamber and Max Roach. A great record. Quote
mjzee Posted August 15, 2010 Report Posted August 15, 2010 Beautiful voice, and a great singer. Those two qualities don't often inhabit the same person, but they did with Abbey. I loved her two '70's albums, People In Me and Painted Lady. Saw her at the Beacon Theatre in NYC around that time (1979?). "I know why the caged bird sings...birds were meant to fly, birds were meant to sing." RIP. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted August 15, 2010 Report Posted August 15, 2010 Can't say anything more than the beautiful sentiments echoed here. RIP. Quote
Claude Schlouch Posted August 15, 2010 Report Posted August 15, 2010 I met her some years ago in Marseille. A very great Lady! RIP Quote
